Lovin' Covers: Rebecca Zanetti, Stephanie Nelson & More!

How is everyone's weekend going?  I (Chas) am gearing up for a new school year and spending my weekend in a "get things done" kind of mode.  As for Jen, she had a celebration today and I'm hoping she enjoyed herself and does not feel too exhausted from planning.
As for the blog, I am very excited to have the schedule of events up and going for you all to see.  Take a look on the left sidebar.  Jen and I have some things in the works.  You may have noticed a guest review on the blog.  Her name is Juls and you can see her review here.  The link also takes you over to the giveaway of The Kure.... so be sure to check it out.  ~Chas

As for the covers I am sharing today, let's start with the ab packed cover by Rebecca Zanetti.  It is the 5th book in her Dark Protector series and is coming out right before Thanksgiving.  Also, Jen has reviewed Book 1 and Book 2 in the series.  Let is know what you think of the series or just the cover?

Next up is an Author, Shanna Swendson, I have not heard of but there's 5 books so be sure to look for further info if interested.  Hulary Duff has her 3ed book in the Elixir series coming out next year.  I just watched an interview with her talking about the series and I must say she's a lovely woman.  Likely, one of the few child/teen stars to not go off the deep end.

Review: Caressed By Ice (Psy-Changeling #3) by Nalini Singh

September 4th 2007 by Berkley Sensation        Caressed By Ice (Psy-Changeling #3) by Nalini Singh
September 4th 2007 by Berkley Sensation
Nalini Singh explores new heights of sensuality, returning to the world of the Psy - where two people who know evil intimately must unlock the good within their icy hearts...

As an Arrow, an elite soldier in the Psy Council ranks, Judd Lauren was forced to do terrible things in the name of his people. Now he is a defector, and his dark abilities have made him the most deadly of assassins - cold, pitiless, unfeeling. Until he meets Brenna...

Brenna Shane Kincaid was an innocent before she was abducted - and had her mind violated - by a serial killer. Her sense of evil runs so deep, she fears she could become a killer herself. Then the first dead body is found, victim of a familiar madness. Judd is her only hope, yet her sensual changeling side rebels against the inhuman chill of his personality, even as desire explodes between them. Shocking and raw, their passion is a danger that threatens not only their hearts, but their very lives...

Chas's Review:
Rating: 4/5 stars

Nalini's world is unique and I can see why her fan base is overwhelming.

Caressed by Iced is titled perfectly.  Judd is all ice.  His personality and demeanor is a result from the project called Silence.  Silence is something I am not even going to attempt to explain but I will say that Judd possesses a lethal mind that can kill with a thought.  Therefore, Silence has been a way to keep his power leashed.
Judd and his family are thought of as long dead by the Psys who would otherwise hunt and terminate them all because of the abilities they all possess.  They have found refuge in a Shifter pack, the SnowDancers.  Judd, unexpectedly finds something else in the SnowDancer compound-- Brenna.

What I really enjoyed about the romance in Caressed is the opposite natures of Judd and Brenna.  Brenna craves and needs touch while Judd is trained to have little physical contact unless you are an assignment to be eliminated.  Reading how the author breaks down Judd's character to make him more man and less machine is riveting.

Another enjoyable aspect is the plot and setting.  The setting is all too familiar but the twist that Nalini writes into the world gives it that 'extra something' needed in a good read.  The plot allows for a wrong verses right and a mixing of boundaries..... it's a wonderful set up to cheer for the underdog.

All in all, fantastic read and definitely worth a read.  The review after this one, I skipped to book ten so I could read Hawke and Sienna.  I will post it in the coming day so check back for that.  I noticed that I skipped book two but that was pure accidental.  I was too eager to move on in the series. Feel free to link your review of this title in the comments.

Predestined (Existence Trilogy, #2)Predestined by Abbi Glines
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So WOW!
Loved that Dank got his POV in this book a little bit :) It was great to hear his view on his feelings towards Pagan. In fact, I peeked over at the author's website and she has a lot MORE of Dank's POV from the first book :) YES!

You would think after helping save her boyfriend from an eternity in Hell that things would go back to normal. Well, as normal as life can be when you can see souls and your boyfriend is Death. But for Pagan Moore, things are just getting weirder.

The high school quarterback and reigning heartthrob, Leif Montgomery, is missing. While the town is in a frenzy of worry, Pagan is a nervous wreck for other reasons. Apparently good ‘ol Leif isn’t your average teenage boy. He isn’t even human. According to Death, Leif doesn’t have a soul. The quarterback may have skipped town but he’s still showing up in Pagan’s dreams... uninvited.
Dank has known from the beginning Leif wasn’t human. But he hadn’t worried about a simple soulless creature. Now, he realizes he made a grave mistake. Pagan’s soul has been marked since birth as a restitution, to a spirit so dark not even Death walks near it. Dank knows saving Pagan’s soul won’t be easy but Pagan is his. And he’s already proven he’ll defy Heaven to keep her. If Hell wants a piece of him too, then bring it on.

Jen's Review:

Loved this book - SPOILERS from book one is below - if you haven't read book one, don't keep reading!

So it all happened so fast towards the end of last book with how Pagan gave the ultimate gift of unselfishness and became Death's personal soul. Awe -

But you should have known it wasn't going to be that easy! HA! As soon as we read the last sentence from that book, Leif took off - where did he go? Who knows - after a month-ish of Pagan and Dank being together finally, Leif was MIA - and even though Dank was happy he wasn't around, he needed to find him.

Pagan was having dreams, dreams of her memories that were once gone. Memories of a little blonde boy that helped her when she needed him, a friend that popped in when she felt lonely. But as soon as it was over, it was gone from her memory.

Dank wasn't impressed, in fact he was downright pissed off that Leif was getting his hooks into Pagan while Dank was off collecting souls. It wasn't like he could give up his job and be around her 24/7 - although he wanted to. But while she slept, she should have been safe.

In walks Gee - I LOVE Gee! She's so cute, and funny! And believe it or not, she's a loyal friend to both Death and Peggy Ann :)
So when Dank has to switch to go to work during the day, and try to figure out how to get Pagan out of the mess her mother got her into when she was a child, Gee was appointed to keep an eye on Peggy Ann. And let me tell ya, Miranda wasn't as impress with Gee as Pagan was :)

With Dank gone so long, Pagan gets a little sad, but she remembers that he's away trying to help her. It's not easy on anyone. And when Leif shows up whenever Gee turns her back, things start to get complicated. Leif doesn't want to bow out gracefully. He wants what's his... and that's Pagan.
Unfortunately for Leif, Dank isn't going to go out without a fight

Loved this story - seems like everything cleared up on its own though, not sure where the next book will go. But I'm really anxious to find out.
I'm thinking Jay is going to come back into Pagan’s life, and Dank really doesn't seem happy about him :)

Existence by Abbi Glines

Existence (Existence Trilogy, #1)Existence by Abbi Glines
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Great story! not a lot of people can pull off a good PNR in YA - but Abbi Glines hasn't let me down yet with any of her books, yet :)
This book reminds me a lot of Eve Langlais's book "Date with Death" Only it was made for YA instead of adult.

What happens when you're stalked by Death? You fall in love with him, of course.

Pagan Moore doesn't cheat Death, but instead, falls in love with him.

Seventeen year old Pagan Moore has seen souls her entire life. Once she realized the strangers she often saw walking through walls were not visible to anyone else, she started ignoring them. If she didn't let them know she could see them, then they left her alone. Until she stepped out of her car the first day of school and saw an incredibly sexy guy lounging on a picnic table, watching her with an amused smirk on his face. Problem is, she knows he's dead.

Not only does he not go away when she ignores him, but he does something none of the others have ever done. He speaks. Pagan is fascinated by the soul. What she doesn't realize is that her appointed time to die is drawing near and the wickedly beautiful soul she is falling in love with is not a soul at all.

He is Death and he's about to break all the rules.

Jen's Review:

Pagan Moore isn't a typical girl, she sees ghosts, spirits, or lost souls wondering around. She learned early on to ignore them, and they'll leave her alone. They can't talk to her, they can't hurt her, but no one else can see them.

The first day of senior year as she walked into the school with her best friend Miranda, she saw a soul sitting on the table outside. She did her best to ignore this good looking thing starring at her.

Dank is a different type of soul, he can talk to Pagan. Not only can he talk to her, but he could touch her.
Pagan couldn't figure out why, but she knew she wasn't afraid of him.

Leif wasn't a soul. He was a real life hottie guy who needed a tutor for his speech class. Yes even on the first day of school. Leif is a great guy. Sure he's the star quarterback, and very popular guy. But he's very down to earth and easy going. And he's been watching Pagan since Freshman year.

Pagan’s feelings for Leif weren't as strong as his were for her. She liked him. He was comfortable to be around, and she felt safe with him. But she didn't love him, her heart only belonged to the one who made her feel safe from the other souls. The one who sang sweet songs to her every night when she was too afraid to sleep. The one that wasn't really there for the world to see.

That is until Dank became HUMAN! That's right. The famous Dank Walker, almost rock star was not going to high school. But he wasn't there to be with Pagan, he started hanging out with Katrina, the school's skank.

Pagan’s life quickly turned around with jealousy.

Sometimes it felt like I was reading two different stories. Pagan’s life turned around so much that she became two different people at times.
It was a real heartbreaker.

But I really loved this story –

The Kure by Jaye Frances & Giveaway

September 16th 2011 by CreateSpace          The Kure by Jaye Frances

Thank you, Jen, for hosting me today on LovLivLife Reviews with my paranormal-occult romance novel, The Kure. I appreciate the opportunity to give your readers a sneak peek and to provide a little background of the story.

The Kure began life as a novella, and it fits nicely into the popular genre of paranormal romance—typically full of passionate vampires, confused werewolves, and wary but curious women who eventually opt for a little sack time with the irresistible undead.
Some of the most interesting questions and comments I’ve received about The Kure have to do with the inspiration for the story, specifically, the historical basis for the rituals and spells carried out by the book’s heroine, Sarah Sheridan.

My goal was to base the ancient book containing those rituals—the Kure—on actual demonic texts of healing used by practitioners of the dark arts during that time period.  When I started researching background material, I found myself in the unusually fortuitous position of finding an incredible wealth of history, folklore, and legend. And frankly, I wasn’t ready for what I found. Disturbing? That’s an understatement. My search took me to some very dark places, some of which continue to visit me in the occasion nightmare.

Despite the malevolent undertones, The Kure is, first and foremost, a love story, with the relationship between the main characters—John and Sarah—an unexpected but welcome
development. The challenge was to portray the undeniable attraction between them while forcing them to struggle with overwhelming obstacles that made a continuing relationship
seem impossible.

****
Here’s an excerpt:
Lucius Harwell leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. He stared intently at John, the same way he might appraise a horse at auction, trying to judge his stamina and strength. “There would be . . . conditions.” Harwell set his fingers on his temples. “Very. Specific. Conditions.”

John nodded, hoping the subtle gesture would convey the appropriate reservations, and if necessary, warrant later forgiveness.

The doctor looked to the very back of his office, scanning the entire space from corner to corner, as if wanting to make certain no one else could hear. “First, you’ll have to promise me you won’t delay the bleeding because of what I tell you, or hold out false hope based on some old witches’ tale.”

“I promise.”

Harwell’s expression grew even more solemn. It was evident John’s answer was not what he hoped to hear. Realizing his patient was not going to relent, he rose from his chair and, shaking his head, walked to the front window. As he looked out over the eerily deserted street, the sun caught half his face, splitting his features into light and dark.

“Second, you must understand the old cures often required the one in need to cast away their good name and to denounce all things holy and pure.”

This time Harwell didn’t look directly at John, but simply paused, offering him an opportunity to speak. But John remained silent, hoping his passive consent would be enough.

“And third,” the doctor continued, “you would have to promise on your very life never to disclose the existence of these books or to speak of what is contained on their pages.”

John cleared his throat. “I agree.”

Lucius Harwell straightened, crossed his arms, and then looked down. John wondered if the doctor was reconsidering, preparing to change his mind. But Harwell said nothing as he reached out and slowly lowered the window shade. Seemingly oblivious to the unmistakable tremble in his hand, he secured the privacy bolt on the office door. Then with slow, determined steps, he walked to the back of the room and paused in front of a wide, ornately carved bookcase. Sinking to one knee, he scanned the umber leather bindings on the bottom shelf, finally resting his hand on one of the
larger volumes. Swiping his thumb back and forth across the spine, he wiped away the dust, as if to be certain of his choice.

Untouched for years, the natural oils in the book’s cover had formed a bond with the adjacent bindings. Bringing both hands to the task, the doctor finally forced the covers to separate with a loud crack. John waited, expecting him to rise and return to his desk,
but Harwell remained on the floor, continuing to remove additional books until the shelf was nearly empty.

As the doctor’s arm disappeared into the vacant space, John could see Harwell was reaching beyond the back of the bookcase and into the wall itself. He heard him muttering, cursing under his breath as he fumbled with something inside the hidden cavity, trying to maneuver it out through the narrow opening.

“I’ve got it,” the doctor grumbled as he slowly held up a tattered cloth pouch. Brushing away the dirt and cobwebs, he set to work on the knotted drawstrings. But as large portions of the bag began to separate, he simply pulled the material apart, releasing a bound manuscript from the rotting fibers.

Carrying it with outstretched arms, the doctor moved to the single window at the back of the office, pushed open the glass, and raised the book above the ledge. Taking a quick breath, he blew hard, shooting a mixture of cobwebs and rat droppings into the rear alley. Leaving a swirling haze in his wake, he returned to his desk, where he pushed the loose papers off to the side and carefully set the crimson-cased volume in the very center of the space.

Although still covered with a layer of dust, John could see the book’s blood-red binding was ornately stamped with strange markings, the front cover finely tooled with a border of scrolls and flourishes. In the very center, a single word served as its title:

KURE

While the main part of the cover appeared to be bound with the familiar cowhide common to the rest of the doctor’s library, the outer trim was thinner and nearly transparent. John wondered if the material had been taken not from an animal, but from a different kind of donor.

The doctor scooted his chair back and sat, his full attention seemingly captured by the elaborately detailed cover.

“Are you sure, John?” Harwell asked without looking up. “Are you absolutely sure you want to know this?”

He could hear it in the doctor’s voice—a final chance to turn back, to reconsider his decision to ignore the possible penalties of both law and Church. John answered without hesitation. “Yes. Please.”

Lucius Harwell raised his glazed eyes. “Come over here and lay your hand on the book.”

It seemed like a strange request. John could only assume the doctor wanted him to make some kind of symbolic gesture, acknowledging that his demand to learn from the forbidden script had made him a willing accomplice in breaking the sacred bond of
secrecy.

As he placed his palm on the leather—if that’s what it was—John took a closer look at the extravagant design now framing his hand. What he had originally assumed to be symbols were actually bizarre and grotesque figures—creatures clearly not human.
Some were portrayed in agony and suffering, while others were shown coupled with naked female forms. Even more sinister was the feel of the book—icy cold, like a solid block of frozen stone.
****

Here’s a brief synopsis of The Kure:
John Tyler, a young man in his early twenties, awakens to find a ghastly affliction taking over his body. When the village doctor offers the conventional, and potentially
disfiguring, treatment as the only cure, John tenaciously convinces the doctor to reveal an alternative remedy—a forbidden ritual contained within an ancient manuscript called the Kure.

Although initially rejecting the vile and sinister rite, John realizes, too late, that the ritual is more than a faded promise scrawled on a page of crumbling paper. And as cure quickly becomes curse, the demonic text unleashes a dark power that drives him to consider the unthinkable—a depraved and wicked act requiring the corruption of an innocent soul.

Ultimately, John must choose between his desperate need to arrest the plague that is destroying his body, and the virtue of the woman he loves, knowing the wrong decision
could cost him his life.

Thank you so much for this information! If you haven't been convinced yet, Let's hear from Juls, a good friend of mine who will be stopping by from time to time for a guest review :)

Juls Review:

First off thank you Jen for telling me about this book.  I don't think I would have picked it up with your recommendation.  Secondly after reading the blurb I was a bit hesitant to read the book.  You see, I'm not a fan of scary books but with some reassurance I found out it wasn't the case.

I really enjoyed John.  He is a great man who had a horrible affliction.  His journey to save his future took him to places he didn't think he would ever travel.
He thought he could expose innocence to his disease but soon found that he would just have to go through the doctors original plan with the leeches.
Sarah thought the one suitor all the girls talked about was in her home to begin courting her.  Little did she know what John's real plans are.  But amazingly enough she was the stronger of the two.  She is such a strong girl that sees more to the situation and wants to solve it with any means.
The Kure was a great read 4.5 stars!!

Thank you to Juls for your great review! Looking forward to more guest reviews from Juls

Perpetual Light by Jordan K. Rose

Perpetual Light by Jordan K. Rose

Thanks so much for having me on LovLivLife Reviews today. I thought I'd talk about heroines and what draws us to them. We all talk about the hero so many times and why we love him, but what about the other half of the story?

We're supposed to want to be or believe we could be the heroine in a romance novel. And so many talented writers develop characters that do just that, make readers fall head over heels into the heroine's POV. How?

When you think about it, romances range from all sorts of time periods and worlds. The heroines aren't even always human. Most times they don't look like the reader. Yet, she, the reader, loves her, even becomes her while in the story. How does a writer do that?

I love heroines across the spectrum. They don't have to be kick-ass fighters who can take on vampires, gunmen, or space monsters. They don't have to have figures that make every man who sees them stop in his tracks. They don't have to be brilliant or even know how to shoot a gun. But they do have to be able to hold their own with the hero.

That's the key to the story for me. I can fall in love with the hero and the heroine if they are well matched. My favorite hero is the super alpha. I love them- on paper in the confines of a book. I'd most likely run for the hills if I ran into one in person. (Who needs that aggravation? J) Since the super alpha hero has an overly masculine persona I love for the heroine to be a little over the top, too.

That doesn't necessarily mean she's extremely feminine and requires the hero to carry her from room to room or that she's a super alpha herself and shoots everyone or is so snarky she becomes super bitch.

It means she's sharp and reads the hero well. She knows when to play up her feminine wiles and when to defend her own honor. She knows what's what and isn't constantly blindsided, but she does need the hero. Her persona compliments his and vice versa.

Heroines need to able to be strong and hold their own against most situations, including the hero, but she also needs to have a softer side. In life, this is the reality. Most women hold their own. We work. We cook. We clean. We have hobbies. We relax. We defend own perspectives, points of view, and domain. What's ours is ours. When someone challenges us, we rise to the occasion. Granted, most of us are not challenged by kidnappers or evil vampires, but still, we step it up when we need to.

We have our weaker moments when we need a hand or supportive shoulder to cry on. We slide into the dumps every once in a while. It happens to the best of us.

And when we're with our lovers, we're softer, feminine, alluring. We are the center of their worlds.

This is reality. It's what makes us able to connect with the heroine, to believe we'd be able to put on men's clothing in 19th century England and go gamble the night away or to use our divine powers as a Pharo of Redemption to deliver lost vampire souls to The Light.

We relate to the heroine. That's the key to loving her.

I'm currently reading Jeanine Frost's Night Huntress series. And I love Cat. She's tough in her own right, fighting what she believes to be the righteous battle. She meets Bones, a master vampire who gives her a good run for her money and at the same time falls in love with her and has to help her believe in love.

What are you reading? What heroines do you love?

Perpetual Light by Jordan K. RoseJen's rating: 4 of 5 stars

Cute book - the beginning was a little hard to understand what was going on. I had a hard time figuring out what was a dream/flash back and what was reality.
But after a little farther into the book it started to become more clear what was going on.
Fate is cruel. Especially when the one you’ve sworn to love for all eternity, the very soul who changed your destiny is the last person you should trust.

After more than three hundred years of running, Lucia Dicomano must make a choice.

Forced to take her place as a Pharo of Redemption, the divine slayer needs to master her forgotten powers. Lucia turns to Vittorio, the one vampire she’s failed to deliver from eternal damnation. But overcoming smoldering remnants of love, lust and anger aren’t their only obstacles.

Samuel, who may know Lucia better than she knows herself, hunts her with a fervor stoked by a thousand years of vengeful hatred. His plan—capture and enslave the weakened Pharo then take control of her elusive power.

Can Lucia trust Vittorio long enough to reclaim her powers? Or will she have no choice but to kill him and battle Samuel alone?

Jen's Review:

Lucia and Vittorio were married over 300 years ago. They were so happy and in love. Until that one dreaded night when Katrina interrupted their date and took Vittorio's life. Changing him into one of the damned. The soulless creatures, a Vampire.
Lucia had been hurt, but she survived. Although surviving without Vittorio wasn't easy.

Vittorio hated what he had become. Katrina had forced her powers over him and turned him into her lover. Forced him to kill humans to feed. He hated himself, and he wanted out. He fought her as hard as he could, and when he was finally strong enough to break free, he did.

The first place he went to was church to beg God for forgiveness. Forgiveness for what he was, for what he did. And he prayed for Lucia. He wanted her to be safe,
When he found out she had been born again, and was looking for him, he stopped everything, and went to find her. Only finding her wasn't that easy.

Lucia isn't a regular human being. She's been reincarnated many times.
Each time she was born again, she had no memory of her past lives. She had no idea what she was. But her dreams became clearer as she got older.. and soon, she would stop everything else in her life and focus only on finding Vittorio.

When Samuel and Brian enter the picture, things get more complicated. Samuel is very strong and powerful, and he wants Lucia for himself.

When Lucia and Vittorio finally get back together after over 300 years, nothing had changed between them. Vampire or not, they were soul mates, and Lucia's job was to kill Vittorio and bring his soul into the light.

But how could she kill the one man she has loved for so long? And why is it her job in the first place?

I really enjoyed this book once these two got together. You could see the love they shared. I liked the originality of this book. and I really loved reading about The Abyss, especially when she was there with someone.

Can't wait to find out what happens in the next book.. I'm assuming there is still more to come :)
