BBA Review: Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling #1) by Nalini Singh

September 5th 2006 by Berkley Sensation Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling #1) by Nalini Singh
September 5th 2006 by Berkley Sensation
Amazon
Nalini Singh dives into a world torn apart by a powerful race with phenomenal powers of the mind-and none of the heart.

In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of "rehabilitation" - the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was...

Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion - and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities - or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation...

Book Bloggers Anonymous (BBA)My Review:
Rating: 5/5 stars

Slave to Sensation is my first Nalini Singh experience and I just might be hooked.  Slave is a mixture of genres, in my opinion.  There is the paranormal romance feel with a but of scifi elements.  I found the mixture a pure pleasure to read.

Changelings or what is mostly referred to as shifters are seen as mere mindless animals by the Psy.  Psy are a race who were once human but now live connected via their minds and possess varied talents.  Honestly, I'm not sure if that's the best way to explain the Psy.  Just imagine human flesh vessels that function purely on logic and due to a program called Silence they are unable to feel emotions.  Nalini took two different races who are complete opposites and explores both ends.

The romance between Sascha and Lucas is unexpected but not unwelcomed, at least not by me. lol!  Sascha is not like all Psy.  For some reason she has maintained the ability to feel emotions despite Silence.  However, her handicap lies in the belief that she is flawed, damaged and no good.  Lucas's instincts tells him that Sascha is anything but defected.  As they both battle one another on the changeling and Psy front there is another battle brewing and that's something more personal.

Slave to Sensation is September's Book Bloggers Anonymous's read and I'm always impressed at what treasures I discover.  I've had this series on my shelf for a while now but I needed the BBA kick to get me reading them.  All in all, any pnr adult reader will find a fantastic read here. the only downfall I can see is the ending is a but anti-climatic.  Once the big mystery is discovered the consequences are glossed over.   I would have liked to have read that first hand.

Release Day & Review: Spider’s Revenge (Elemental Assassin #5) by Jennifer Estep

September 27th 2011 Spider’s Revenge (Elemental Assassin #5) by Jennifer Estep
September 27th 2011 by Pocket
Old habits die hard.

And I plan on murdering someone before the night is through.

Killing used to be my regular gig, after all. Gin Blanco, aka the Spider, assassin-for-hire. And I was very good at it. Now, I’m ready to make the one hit that truly matters: Mab Monroe, the dangerous Fire elemental who murdered my family when I was thirteen. Oh, I don’t think the mission will be easy, but turns out it’s a bit more problematic than expected. The bitch knows I’m coming for her. So now I’m up against the army of lethal bounty hunters she hired to track me down. She also put a price on my baby sister’s head. Keeping Bria safe is my first priority. Taking Mab out is a close second. Good thing I’ve got my powerful Stone and Ice magic — and my irresistible lover Owen Grayson — to watch my back. This battle has been years in the making, and there’s a chance I won’t survive. But if I’m going down, then Mab’s coming with me … no matter what I have to do to make that happen.

LLLKINDLE 60x90My Review:
My Rating: 5/5 Stars

Just when I thought I could not be surprised no more Jennifer Estep and Gin Blanco pulls a fast one.  The fifth book's as awe riveting as the first one.  I'm beyond impressed at how the series is still top notch.  Not a single boring sentence.

Gin is on the move as soon as the novel begins.  Creeping through the snow, slipping past Mab's giants, making her way undetected..... that's the Gin I know and love to read.  What happens soon after is the first explosive surprise and I must admit it only gets better aka more dangerous.

Action, strong storylines, a yummy side dish of romance aside relationships is what always gets to me when I read this series.  There is so much love and loyalty woven into the characters and the overall story.  Thankfully I am no pessimist.

All in all, a whole new book, a whole new set of challenges but the same characters I love and as entertaining as the previous four books.  How do you do it Jennifer?

Release Day & Review: Redemption by Eleri Stone

Happy Release Day!

September 26th 2011 by Carina Press          Redemption by Eleri Stone
September 26th 2011 by Carina Press
Blamed for a heinous crime and banished from his tribe of Jaguar shifters, Adriano will do anything to buy back his rightful place-even steal a priceless artifact. First, he'll have to seduce Sophie Martin, an archaeologist researching the temple ruins and the one person who stands in his way.

Sophie wants to uncover the artifact as well-not to sell it, but to study it. It could unlock all the secrets of an ancient and mysterious civilization. But it's hard to focus on her work when the distractingly sexy Adriano is nearby.

What begins as a seduction quickly turns into mutual passion as Adriano's touch awakens a side of Sophie she'd kept hidden-and arouses his Jaguar instincts. To preserve his people's secret and earn his redemption, Adriano needs the artifact. But when a rival thief kidnaps Sophie, Adriano will be forced to choose-between the people who rejected him in the past, or the woman who could be his future...

LLLKINDLE 60x90My Review:
Rating: 5/5 stars

Eleri Stone has a talent for creating and telling stories.  I fell in love with her jaguar shifter world last year after I read Mercy and now I am determined to read more shifter titles from her.  Redemption gave me more of the world I love and for that alone I'm excited to write this review.

Adriano is half man and half animal but all crazy for Sophie. Sophie is a quiet woman who tries to fly below everyone's radar.  She is intelligent, goal-oriented and with her own secrets.  The fireworks that sizzle between the two is explosive and absolutely crazy enjoyable to read.  The setting, in the middle of an archaeological dig creates the perfect atmosphere for explorations of all kinds. *wink*

All in all, Redemption (book 2) is a title I much enjoyed.  I'm a "series" kind of gal so I thoroughly love references made to the previous books/story-lines.  Redemption, does mention the King and Queen (My review of Mercy) but the story is all Adriano and Sophie.

Review: Rock You Like A Hurricane (Sirenic, #1) by JoAnne Kenrick

September 21st 2011 by www.sirenpublishing.com     Rock You Like A Hurricane (Sirenic, #1). by JoAnne Kenrick
It's 1989 and Ryker Conall, American rock star and heartbreaker, is looking all kinds of Bon Jovi hot. He's back in Australia and staying in the exclusive Darling Harbour Hotel where Sadie Fox works. His plans include more than rocking it down under. He also wants to rekindle what he had with Sadie back in '85. But wanting and getting are two different things.

Sadie's objective is to get through the week without getting under Ryker. Getting over him was hard the first time around. She's not sure she could do it a second. Just one week, that's all. Then she's home free.

When a hurricane moves in, they have to wait it out. It might be a big hotel, but Sadie can't hide from Ryker forever. It's not long before Sadie is backed into a corner. A corner she is not sure she wants to get out of.

Jen's Review:
Rating: 4 of 5 stars
This review can be found through Jen's networks as well..

Cilck on the book cover image to see the actual book cover - This is an Erotic Short Story, but my kids look over my shoulder when I'm on the computer :)

This was a REALLY cute story - I loved the plot to it :) Although I'm a big "BonJovi" fan, he's not really in this book - but Ryker does look a little like him :) And they mention “you give love a bad name” which is now in my head J (payback for my kids watching me on the computer :D)

I liked the book being in the 80's - those were the good times (and Best Music!)
The way they talked, "Says the Shoulder padded Kylie wannabe" and the way they dressed "... reminded her that her appetite for rockers had gone up in flames when she had burned her spandex leggings and thigh-high rocker books years ago" Although I was never a fan of Spandex, I do take offence to those Thigh-high rocker boots! Those were Awesome! (Smiles) I also loved her "ghetto blaster moments" and their songs :)Oh and let's not forget her candle fetish :) HA! I am tempted to play with candles now :)

The book starts off with Sadie, the Manager of Entertainment at the Hotel she works for, and a BIG crowd of screaming, pushing, annoying groupie chicks just itching to get a peek at Ryker - the lead singer of Sirenic. And also the love of her life, well he use to be - at least that's what she keeps telling herself. They met back in 1985 (almost 5 years ago) and even though they were only together the one weekend - they knew they were meant to be together - it was the hottest weekend of their lives - or so she thought... until he didn't show up to meet her just before their flight left... "Ogle em' and leave em"

Ryker - hot sexy and WOW! He's head over heels in love with Sadie, and he came back just for her. He's ready to settle down with a wife and kids, even a dog When he sees her across the room on the other side of screaming fans, he motions for his bodyguard to track her down... Sadie tries to get away, only he follows her all the way down to her office and taps her on the shoulder. Explaining that Ryker wants to meet her.. "Not to be rude, Mr. Official, but I know what a meet and greet means in his language. Since I'm not a piece of meat that needs greeting, I'll pass."

Ryker wasn't about to be blown off - not this time around. He manages to find his way to her office, bringing the whole crowd with him and cramming everyone into the small office building. Once she pities him enough to let him into her closet sized office, he's ready to strike.

But Sidney knows she isn't strong enough for another broken heart, so she does what she can to resist

The passion between the two is hot, and trying to fight it makes it even hotter :)

This cute short story was a lot of fun to read. I wish it would have flashed back a little to their time before when they met, or maybe thrown in a few more words to the song they wrote together. It sounded really good :) But over all, it was really a fun read

Release Day & Review: A Bloody Good Secret (Secret McQueen #2) by Sierra Dean

Happy Release Day!!!
*Note this book released on the 20th but for some reason when I published the pre-prepared post yesterday it was not placed at the top.  Therefore, I am re-posting so that this post may be at the very top for all to see. Thank you!

September 20th 2011 by Samhain Publishing, Ltd. A Bloody Good Secret (Secret McQueen #2) by Sierra Dean
September 20th 2011 by Samhain Publishing Ltd
After cheating death twice in one night, confessing her true nature to her werewolf soul mates and being asked to kill one of her closest friends, Secret took a much-needed vacation. By running away.

Now she’s back in town—dragged kicking and screaming—determined to clear Holden Chancery’s name. Right after she finds out what he’s accused of. It shouldn’t be hard—Holden has a habit of using their new and scintillating psychic bond to break into her thoughts and dreams at some very, shall we say, awkward moments.

Just a few things stand in her way: a secretive Tribunal leader, a group of would-be vampire slayers and two werewolf boyfriends who refuse to let her operate in her customary lone-wolf style. Even less amusing are the terrifying creatures that someone is using in an attempt to gain control of the council. Even for this out-of-the-ordinary bounty hunter, it’s a challenge with potentially deadly teeth.

Warning: Contains an ever-plucky heroine with no shortage of weapons, super-hot mind games, an ever-complicated love triangle and one hell of a creepy amusement park.

My Review:
Rating: 4/5 stars

Secret is back at it.  She's hiding out after receiving an envelope with the name of her next target.  Problem is the name's not just a name and Secret has this pesky thing about her, it's called a conscious.  So who can blame her for not sharpening the tools of her assassination trade and hightailing it out of dodge.

A Bloody Good Secret, takes interesting turn after interesting turn.  As Secret works to clear the name in the envelope she faces a few obstacles.  When do I clump romance into the phrase "a few obstacles?"  When there's a love triangle.  Honestly, it's like a square due to having 3 potential men.  LOL!  Secret knows how to entertain her readers.

The vampire Tribunal is front and center in this sequel's plot.  Who has framed Secret's liaison?  Well, there are secrets to uncover and someone will be paying.

All in all, I enjoy reading Secret.  I'm not so hot for the romance.  It's all a bit fickle and honestly all the men are lovable which leads to a major dilemma! Who do I root for?  Mostly, I'm eager to learn of a few more things about Secret and this world she occupies.

Review: The Madame of Gravestone (The Corset Chronicles, #1) by Misty Burke

May 9th 2011 by Summerhouse Publishing     The Madame of Gravestone (The Corset Chronicles, #1) by Misty Burke
May 9th 2011 by Summerhouse Publishing
Tripp Monroe is on an easy assignment, photographing the Kansas City Steampunk Ball. Attendees dressed in costume, playing with mechanical gizmos, surround him and he’s bored out of his mind. Until…until he’s thrust into a world he’d never imagined. Into a world where the Civil War ended without a winner. Where the North walked away and the South formed their own crippled country. And the West? Well, they pulled away from both sides and created Westland. A rough and tumble country, complete with an evil King. Before long, Tripp finds himself mixed up with a traitorous band of women looking to overthrow a king. And, of course, the delectable Emma, leader and Madame of Gravestone, needs him for her plan to work. But, could she want him for more?

LLLKINDLE 60x90My Review:
Rating: 3/5 Stars

The Madame of Gravestone has a fantastic setting for an awesome Steampunk read.  The idea of Gravestone as a floating town housing rebel women looking to cease the selfish advancements of the King is intriguing.  Emma who is the leader of the rebel pack is feisty, brave and loyal to the people of Westland.  She also hold a secret that really took me by surprise.
Tripp, professional photographer, doesn't believe the Professor that there is another world in which he has traveled time to visit.  Poor Tripp is made a believer when he too fall from the sky onto Gravestone.

All in all, The Madame of Gravestone is a short and nice read but it only skimmed the surface of steampunk.  The chemistry between the protagonists is tangible but the romance too fast.  The action was present and I wanted more.  The overall storyline is creative and worth a full length novel.

Review: Daimon: A Prequel to Half-Blood (Covenant 0.5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

April 19th 2011 by Spencer Hill Press        Daimon: A Prequel to Half-Blood (Covenant 0.5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
"Love in my world usually ended up with someone hearing 'I smite thee!' as she was cursed to be some lame flower for the rest of her life."

For three years, Alexandria has lived among mortals—pretending to be like them and trying to forget the duty she'd been trained to fulfill as a child of a mortal and a demigod. At seventeen, she's pretty much accepted that she's a freak by mortal standards… and that she'll never be prepared for that duty.

According to her mother, that’s a good thing.

But as every descendant of the gods knows, Fate has a way of rearing her ugly head. A horrifying attack forces Alex to flee Miami and try to find her way back to the very place her mother had warned her she should never return—the Covenant. Every step that brings her closer to safety is one more step toward death… because she's being hunted by the very creatures she'd once trained to kill.

The daimons have found her.
My Review:
Rating: 5/5 Stars

I read this one right before reading Half-Blood and I am glad I did.  This prequel shares Alex's devastating lost of her Mother to the daimons.  This short prequel swells with emotions and gives Alex's determination in Half-Blood reason.

All in all, short review for a short prequel and only a dollar.  Half-Blood has not been released yet but take my word for it-- It's Awesome!

This review can be found through Jen's networks as well..

This was a really cute book - the ending leaves you wide open for more possibilities :)

True this book was predictable - I guessed everything early on - but you know what, it was ok - the book really pulled it off -

Sure you know what kind of demon book they were looking for, they dropped a lot of hints on that one - and it wasn't a big surprise to see who was in charge of the big mess at the end... but there was a lot of little things inside the story that made up for that -

Willy - He's the cutest half-demon! Sure he's a big strong guy, but with his stutter and him always afraid - it really really makes him that much of a cuter character. bringing in the truth that just because he's half demon, doesn't make him evil ... right?

Then of course there is Rayna - what the heck is she?? There is a LOT of stuff mixed in with her, but where did it all come from? She's a mystery, but a very talented mystery - with *hand that were both warm and soft*

I really liked this book for many reasons - everything was on impulse. and it seemed like everything was going wrong ... until everything started piecing together....

Now, once they get into this new demention - ok I'm not a big fan of leap frog in different dementions in my books - But M.R. Merrick did a really good job with this new world! Drakar is what it's called :) I loved the Purple river with water with a taste of it's own. The purest and richest water to ever touch his mouth.

And what about the "tiny bird" ?? Sure we could figure out what happens to it, but the magic that pumps out of it at the end is just awesome!

Really a great story - looking forward to reading the next one and finding out what happens :)

Release Day & Review: Vanish (Firelight #2) by Sophie Jordan

Happy Release Day!

September 6th 2011 by HarperTeen   Vanish (Firelight #2) by Sophie Jordan
September 6th 2011 by HarperTeen
An Impossible Romance.
Bitter Rivalries.
Deadly Choices.
To save the life of the boy she loves, Jacinda did the unthinkable: She betrayed the most closely-guarded secret of her kind. Now she must return to the protection of her pride knowing she might never see Will again—and worse, that because his mind has been shaded, Will’s memories of that fateful night and why she had to flee are gone.

Back home, Jacinda is greeted with hostility and must work to prove her loyalty for both her sake and her family’s. Among the few who will even talk to her are Cassian, the pride’s heir apparent who has always wanted her, and her sister, Tamra, who has been forever changed by a twist of fate. Jacinda knows that she should forget Will and move on—that if he managed to remember and keep his promise to find her, it would only endanger them both. Yet she clings to the hope that someday they will be together again. When the chance arrives to follow her heart, will she risk everything for love?

In bestselling author Sophie Jordan’s dramatic follow-up to Firelight, forbidden love burns brighter than ever.

My Review:
Rating: 4/5 Stars
"It's a strange realization... feeling guilt does not mean I regret anything."
Vanish brings forth the next installment in Jacinda's life.  I thoroughly enjoyed book one (My review of Firelight) and happy to say the trend is sticking.  Jacinda is back at home trying desperately to forget the boy she loves all the while trying to survive the fall out of what has already transpired.  What's a draki girl to do?

Cassian's true colors come to light in Vanish and I must admit that I've come to really like him.  Jacinda doesn't give him much of a chance to accept that he likes her for her and not because of 'what' she is.  Apart of me was hoping she'd take this opportunity to find a new friendship in Cassian.  Will is as determined as ever and still the boy Jacinda holds in her heart.  He is brave and resilient and so easy to fall into step with.  Most surprisingly, Tamra has come into her Draki self and has added to an already rich character set-up.  Their Mother has her own troubles to deal with but overall the plot direction is superb.

Vanish is such a fitting title with examples brimming in the plot.  Jacinda is lonely as those she once had around her are no longer consistently present.  She's cut off and treated like nothing.  Raw emotions bubbling and difficult choices to be made.  Sophie Jordan does a fine job writing Jacinda and has created a storyline that kept me intrigued.
"Will understood about loneliness.  About being apart, separate from the world that you inhabit.  A stranger among your own kind.  Will understood that.  He understood me."
What will happen next?  I'm certainly looking forward to more.  For those who love YA this one is up your alley.

Haley knows a big storm is approaching—and with it will come unexpected delights. But so, too, will the storm unleash her greatest fears: an enemy bent on destroying Remy. And her worst fear of all—falling in love with this magnificent man, then having to betray him.

My Review:
Rating: 5 Stars

Riding the Storm hits all the right spots.  What an enjoyable read.  Sydney Croft is the pseudonym for Larissa Ione and Stephanie Tyler.  I am very familiar with L. Ione's work and I always say how she never lets me down.

The sizzling chemistry and the raw emotions written into this explosive storyline is fantastic.  In addition to the main plot there is two sub-plots brewing.  The main story of Remy and Haley is hot, heavy and breaks new ground for me.  Creed and Annika have a hate/love thing going and then there is Devlin with his own demons to wrestle.  All three stories are utterly riveting.  The paranormal aspect like with Remy controlling the weather hooked me immediately.

In this world of Covert Rare Operatives action, suspense and romance is teeming with paranormal excitement.  Readers will thorough;y enjoy this novel as I have.  I am happy to have selected this one to read out of my personal collection.

I do have a question for those who have read this series.  How does Devlin and Creed/Annika's story get told?  I don't see their story mentioned in the blurbs for latter books.
