Nalini Singh dives into a world torn apart by a powerful race with phenomenal powers of the mind-and none of the heart.
In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of "rehabilitation" - the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was...
Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion - and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities - or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation...
My Review:Rating: 5/5 stars
Slave to Sensation is my first Nalini Singh experience and I just might be hooked. Slave is a mixture of genres, in my opinion. There is the paranormal romance feel with a but of scifi elements. I found the mixture a pure pleasure to read.
Changelings or what is mostly referred to as shifters are seen as mere mindless animals by the Psy. Psy are a race who were once human but now live connected via their minds and possess varied talents. Honestly, I'm not sure if that's the best way to explain the Psy. Just imagine human flesh vessels that function purely on logic and due to a program called Silence they are unable to feel emotions. Nalini took two different races who are complete opposites and explores both ends.
The romance between Sascha and Lucas is unexpected but not unwelcomed, at least not by me. lol! Sascha is not like all Psy. For some reason she has maintained the ability to feel emotions despite Silence. However, her handicap lies in the belief that she is flawed, damaged and no good. Lucas's instincts tells him that Sascha is anything but defected. As they both battle one another on the changeling and Psy front there is another battle brewing and that's something more personal.
Slave to Sensation is September's Book Bloggers Anonymous's read and I'm always impressed at what treasures I discover. I've had this series on my shelf for a while now but I needed the BBA kick to get me reading them. All in all, any pnr adult reader will find a fantastic read here. the only downfall I can see is the ending is a but anti-climatic. Once the big mystery is discovered the consequences are glossed over. I would have liked to have read that first hand.
