Game Over
November 2nd 2010 by Tor Paranormal Romance
Paperback, 416 pages

"Video game designer River Weston is ready to sell her soul to smooth out the glitches in her latest project. When she unwittingly taps into a parallel dimension via cutting-edge technology, a Dark Lord is quick to take her up on her inadvertent offer. Trapped in the world she thought she’d created for her game, River finds herself in a very real alternate dimension that she must escape from before her soul can be used to unleash evil--upon this dimension and many others.

River’s only ally is the sexy and mysterious Chase Hawkins.  A prisoner of the Dark Lord, Hawk is a man adrift—literally. His body safe at home under the watchful care of the Guardians’ scientists, his astral-traveling spirit has been enslaved by his people’s worst enemy, the Dark Lord. Clinging desperately to his sense of self, Hawk is determined to turn the tables on his captor before the connection to his body is lost.  When the beautiful, achingly familiar River enters the picture, he vows he will do everything he can to save her from her bleak fate.

Drawn together with an inescapable force, Hawk and River must wrest her soul from the Dark Lord’s grasp before it’s too late.

ARCTIC SHIFT (Denali Heat, #1)
by Lissa Matthews

Visit Lissa around the Web:

Arctic Shift is published by Samhain Publishing and is ready to purchase by August 24th (according to Goodreads).  This novella is 77 pages and in ebook format.

Here is the blurb from Lissa's site:
She believes in myths…can she believe in destiny?

Denali Heat, Book 1

Unlike her adventurous sister, Ruby is perfectly content to let her mind be the wanderlust while her body stays safely in Chicago. Melanie wouldn’t be out of touch this long without a damned good reason, though. Which means it’s time for a giant step outside her comfort zone.

While Denali National Park is like another planet, the myths and legends that saturate this wild land are right up her alley. The wilderness guide waiting for her—naked in her bed—looks about as safe as a polar bear.

Carson’s people are kin to the great beast, right down to the white hair. Before Ruby ever set foot in Alaska, his inner bear knew that Melanie’s little sister was his mate. He’s doing his level best not to let his primal needs scare her, but everything about her sends his urge to possess her into overdrive.

To his surprise, revealing he’s a shifter only stimulates her innate curiosity. Warming her with the perfect fire of their lovemaking, easy. Convincing her that real love isn’t a myth—and making her want to stay in his home, his bed, his heart—now, that’s a problem…
Warning: cozy flannel PJs, a naked shifter, incredible food and some fireside sex hot enough to melt the polar ice caps…

Blame It On the Moonlight
by Tracie Sommers

 Visit Tracie arounf the web:

Blame It On The Moonlight is also brought to us in ebook format but instead by Harlequin.  I am not sure on any other information but I did not find any indicators that this one is any thing short of a regular length novel.

Blurb from Website:
A hidden past, a handsome, shape-shifting stranger, and a soul-deep connection that ignites under moonlight...
Jasmine stepped backwards until she bumped into something rough and solid—the tree trunk. He was on her in a second. His hands braced either side of her head as he leaned in close to her ear, his hot breath washing over her cool skin.
"Where are you going, little girl?" His gaze kept dropping to her lips as if mesmerized by them.

"I don‘t know who you are," she whispered.
"Yes, you do." He leaned forward, his breath a tender caress against her mouth. "I‘m the big bad wolf."

"This is one hot, hot, hot story and it's called BLAME IT ON THE MOONLIGHT, the new Spice Brief from Aussie author, Tracie Sommers." Kylie Griffin

Review: Tsunami Blue by Gayle Ann Williams

The title, cover and the blurb had me anticipating this novel for months.  Finally, I have read Tsunami Blue in its entirety.
"NO SAFE HARBOR
With her badass rain boots, her faithful dog, and the ability to predict the monster tsunamis that have reduced the US to a series of islands, Kathryn O’Malley isn’t afraid of much. Cut off from all society, she takes to the airwaves as Tsunami Blue, hoping to save something of humanity as the world around her crumbles. But Blue should be afraid—because her message reaches the wrong ears.

Now she’s the target of ruthless pirates known as Runners who want to use her special talents for their own profiteering—as soon as they can find her. Blue’s only shot at survival lies with the naked stranger who washes up on her rocky beach. A man who might just be working for Runners himself. Torn between suspicion and attraction, the two will have to navigate a surging tide of danger and deceit if they hope to stay alive."
My main fascination with Tsunami Blue was the Ocean.  I grew up near the Ocean and seriously no matter where I live on O'ahu I will be close to a shoreline.  And I would not have it any other way.  I must admit it was a bit nerve racking because I know how powerful the Ocean is and I don't want to imagine battling those kinds of waves.

Kathryn "Blue" O'Malley once a young girl crying warnings of a Tsunami that nearly wiped the population out is now an adult and the most highly sought after commodity.  Living in isolation with her dog she broadcasts wave reports on the air waves to whom ever can hear her.  Tsunami Blue or Blue for short knows that survivors want to either kill her or use her but still she broadcast what the waves whisper to her.

Runners are the Pirates of the sea but they do not limit themselves to terror on the sea but the land as well.  They are dangerous, murderous, greedy and heartless bastards.  Until she meets Gabriel Black, the runner who washed up on her shore and whose life she saved.

The plot is undoubtedly stimulating.  The setting is perfectly placed for me that I had little difficulty imagining this world.  Ocean, waves, sand, sharks, fish (Salmon especially), and the boats.  Of course, on the flip side there was blood, guts, knives of all wicked properties, pirates and a few other thing I sure as heck am not used to, only in a novel that is.  With this wicked blend of familiarity and fantasy I was captured.  Hook, line and sinker.

The romance was almost immediate.  There was no guessing who the love interests would be but how it evolved is an adventure.  On the negative, I hated how Blue kept on second guessing Gabriel's intentions to almost the very end.

Adventure. There is an element of adventure to be had sailing the open seas.  The Author did not spare Blue and Gabriel- they were thrust into trial after trial.  The author was not selfish- each character had the opportunity to play the hero.  The author was daring- Characters were diverse in appearance and in perversity *shutters*

Confusion.  I am a wee bit confused on one matter: The cause of the Tsunamis.  There is a brief mention global warming but only brief but mostly it is more of a mystical cause and effect.  The whispering seas.  The ocean is given life and personality- playing tricks on blue.  Teasing and taunting as well.  I am leaning towards the mystical element since this is a PNR book and all signs come from that direction but there was no clear explanation.  Even with the slight guess work I read this novel in a day.  It did not hinder me from enjoying the flow of each page.

Epilogue.  I love authors who give us Epilogues because when I enjoy a storyline and the characters I want more and I need a sense of closure.  And, oh, how I adore the Epi. *sigh* I am a creature of habit and crave for a HEA.

All in all, I enjoyed this novel.  The Gayle Ann Williams is very talented and I will continue to follow her work.

...in my mailbox 27... & Got Books Sunday

Dang, it has been a while since I have done one of these postings.  Too long.  July 17 was my last IMM and Got Books post and I think it's time I finally get back on schedule.  The past month my shelves are swelling with new reads- well, some old titles but new to me.  Some are brand spankin' new while others are purchased from the Library Book Sale.  I have a teeny weeny problem and that is "I have to rescue all the books."  Which means I leave these library sales with too many books and some I might never get to but I will try.  My rationale is 'the money goes to a great cause of keeping the Hawaii State Library system functioning.'

Anyhow, I will quit my yapping and start listing some yummy reads I got.  It's 1 am and I am beat so I will have to continue another day.

Review: Mockingjay (Hunger Games #3) by Suzanne Collins

Mockingjay has been the most anticipated novel this year, imo.  The Hunger Games and Catching Fire are explosive reads and resulted in hordes of fans (me very much included).  The entire trilogy is gripping in a way great novels ought to be.  Suzanne Collins has created books that make your heart and mind race trying to keep up with the other.  Adrenaline-action, pain, disgust, deceit, hope, love and all the above playing it out page after page.

Mockingjay has a surreal yet dreaming feel to it.  Katniss was in and out of a stupor of pain meds- recovery after recovery.  Katniss has definitely faced the harsh reality of life.  There is not a single feeling this young teen has not felt- in fact, her age is easily forgotten.  Katniss is thrown into the heat of battle.  She is the unsuspecting symbol that rises segregated districts to form one front.  But as she learns- rarely does an enemy have one face.

I could have done without the dreamy/ drugged phases of Katniss esp since she is the narrator.  There are a few spots that I would benefit from more story line- maybe because I am selfish and want more pages to read but mostly because I felt it warranted more.  Case in point, the final chapter almost seemed like a stilling-rush.  Stilling within Katniss's mind because she's distraught and moving in slow motion but a rush because there is so much going on around her but we are not privileged to learn of it first hand without Katniss.
Also at the ending, I am a bit bummed that we don't get to see a rekindling phase between Katniss and her suitor (I hate to give away who).  It was more of a tell not show deal.

The highlight of the novel and the briefest of moments is of Katniss and Gale showing their partnered hunting skills as one in District 8.  It felt as if I was in the thick of things and cheering them on.  I wish there were more moments like that one.  Honestly, reading is most enjoyable when Katniss is in the mist of everything.  She is a force to be known.  When she is in action and takes the lead, all of my thoughts of cooking dinner, washing a load, running errand is banished from my mind.  I am zeroed in on the story.

All in all, the plot was superb.  There was a whole new backdrop of District 13 and The Capitol- a change from the Arena but still savagely similar.  The ending, which is very important in the final intallment, is peaceful.  There are no loose ends or messes to clean up.
In the first two installments I praise the novels for the 'element of surprise' and it hold true in mockinjay.  I will say that I called the surprise at the end but I think majority of the readers most likely called it (hint- the final arrow).  Other surprises where momentous- Suzanne writes for the story, meaning that no one is safe in this novel.
Mockingjay is a fitting edition to the trilogy and a MUST read.  However, I will say that The Hunger Games and Catching Fire are my most favorite or the series with Mockingjay just a hair behind.  Btw, Thank you Suzanne for the Epilogue- I love it.

The series is excellent for all readers.  Where you are a 'more-so' fan of one genre over the other- it doesn't matter here.

Has anyone noticed the format change on Goodreads.com?  I am wondering if I clicked something to change it or of everyone is seeing the same thing.  The main difference is the "Buy a copy" button.  I am guessing I should have read the GR Newsletter.  If this is an actual change I am sure it was mentioned there.

Anyone know anything?

Review: Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh

Angels' Blood is definitely a PNR book and heavy on the 'R' in my opinion.  Certainly, no complaining here.
Sexual tension is high on my list of elements I love to read.

Elena Deveraux is a Guild Hunter with refined abilities that are not common among her kind nor in the past.  She is unique and in any case a commodity against a very dangerous creature.  Archangel, Raphael enlist the help of Elena at no choice to her.  Raphael needs the best for the job, Elena is the best but is she really the nest for the angel himself.

This world of Archangels, angels, and vampires is interesting.  Although I am not completely sold on the connection angels and vampires have to one another or the fact that they (angels and vamps) are not hidden among the general public.  It is very intriguing though and I am engulfed with Nalini's character hierarchy with the archangels at the very top of the food chain.  Not to mention the guild hunters.  I am always up for action as much as I am for romance.  The guild hunters are all action and I love it.  Elena is a fierce character who I already enjoy reading and plan to continue reading on.

This book is great for those who enjoy equal doses of action and romance.
