Review: Whisper of a Witch by Suza Kates

Whisper of a Witch
Click here for the synopsis and excerpt of this novel.

I am ready to google real estate in the Savannah area, call the Hawaiian Humane Society and adopt my very own cat (or two), and watch reruns of Charmed and Eastwick on the tube.  Suza Kates Whisper of a Witch is filled with vibrant characters with distinct personalities.  Suza's knack for description is eloquent and serves to entice.

Notable snippet:
"Michael gripped the steering wheel and looked up at the skies that darkened to suit his mood.  Black clouds roiled above like a poisonous witch's brew, and fat raindrops began their assault on the windshield." (p 164)

I appreciate Suza utilizing the Prologue to share a passage on each of the woman that plays a role in this installment.  The brief passages was enough for me to grasp a basic foundation of each woman.  As I read on I was able to add a little more and more to the already forming picture of these gals.  I guarantee that readers will connect with at least on of the them being that they are diverse.  Anna, Hayden, Lucia, Shauni, Paige, Kylie, Viv, Willyn, and Claudia.

Shauni has a gift of magic that she doesn't fully understand nor has she fully stepped into.  Feeling a force within pulling at her, she obeys and sets out towards Savannah, Georgia.  Shauni quickly learns that she is not the only one gifted generously with magic and equally as clueless.  Soon enough in walks in Dr. Micheal Black. Brainy and brawny, raven hair and fire green eyes- there is a connection between the two that is felt almost instant.
Between self-discovery, preparations, romantic lunches, deciphering puzzles, unsuspecting attacks, animals out of the wood works, auras running rapid, and adversaries  lurking in shadows trying to change an ancient prophesy through demonic means- it's a wonder how Shauni will be able to pull ahead.   Ah, but Shauni is not alone.  With her newly founded sisters, a somewhat bother and boyfriend-all whom posses magic of their own, perhaps Shauni will succeed and the world live to see another day.

Another enjoyable aspect was the balanced usage of Witch lore.  Readers are not bombarded with cauldrons and frog leg recipes. There are amulets, spells and cats so not to worry.  Uniquely,  Suza introduces aura trails which I found fascinating.  I've read novels that incorporate auras but not a trail that those who are gifted could follow.  Also, I loved the witch-cat connection and their names.  I was having fun connection the dots with all the pieces I was discovering along the way.

On the flip, I found around a dozen typo errors- nothing to call the punctuation police or your ninth grade English teacher but it was evident.  Usually, typos are few and far between and so that's why it stood out here but it did not effect the plot at all.  Also, with ample characters it did take me a few chapters to maintain a stable break-down of whom is who.  On to the final "on the flip" bit- I love dialog and there is lots here so that's not the problem.  There were occasions where I had to back up in a sentence to make sure who was talking at the time but it did not effect the flow of the storyline.

Down to the nitty gritty- I enjoyed all 229 pages.  I am looking forward to learning more of each witch sister and their back stories.  Hmm, maybe in the mean time I can find a way of getting inducted into the Savannah Coven.  The idea of a big family with fierce and loyal sisters at your side is welcoming.

Conviction of a Witch will be released February 2011.  I will keep you all updated with any tidbits I learn or you can sign up for Suza's Newsletter.  Also, Suza Kates has a trilogy hitting the shelves Fall this year.  The She Trilogy with She Who is Hidden being book 1.

Slayed by Amanda Marrone

I've read Uninvited by Amanda Marrone a while back and didn't like it very much but learning of Slayed I am open to be dazzled.  Rivaling slayer families that can be bought to slay vampires? and a potential love affair btwn the younger slayers?  The name Van Helsing alone is enough to perk up my delicate ears.  So if your interest is peeked like mine this one is due out in paperback by Simon Pulse, October 5, 2010.  In the mean time I tried to look up any additional information on Amanda's website but I see no mention of Slayed so I sent her an email.
Update: Amanda has contacted me back saying the website has not been updated but she gave me a link to a review and it just so happens that Savannah @ Books With Bite also left me the same link in the comments. lol and Thank you.  Click here if you'd like to read her review.  Amanda has also agreed to do some kind of guest post- Is there anything you all would love to know?

https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=33abb18530&view=att&th=12a29fcca05b54af&attid=0.1&disp=inline&zw

"The Van Helsing family has been hunting vampires for over one hundred years, but sixteen-year-old Daphne wishes her parents would take up an occupation that doesn't involve decapitating vamps for cash. All Daphne wants is to settle down in one place, attend an actual school, and finally find a BFF to go to the mall with. Instead, Daphne has resigned herself to a life of fast food, cheap motels and buying garlic in bulk.

But when the Van Helsings are called to a coastal town in Maine, Daphne's world is turned upside down. Not only do the Van Helsings find themselves hunting a terrifying new kind of vampire (one without fangs but with a taste for kindergarten cuisine), Daphne meets her first potential BF! The hitch? Her new crush is none other than Tyler Harker, AKA, the son of the rival slayer family.
What's a teen vampire slayer to do?"

Review: Claire de Lune by Christine Johnson

Claire de Lune is not a typical werewolf story which I much appreciate.  Werewolves or loup garou are no secret in this world which causes quite a stir in Hanover Falls.  In this world there are no men shifters- there are only females.  Even though werewolves are not a secret per se Claire's Pack identity is.  So you can imagine what a mess an une seule (lone wolf/rogue) running around causes.  Not to mention a ladder climbing scientist living in the same town and he will stop at nothing to get the results he wants- a cure for werewolves.  On top of all this Claire doesn't want to transform under the full moon- she wants to be normal.  She wants to date a very cute boy who happens to be interested in her as well.  Despite being thrown into this new furry life style after 16 years of seemingly normalcy Claire engulfs herself into learning all things loup garou.

On the negative side, the action didn't pick up until the last half of the novel when Marie (Claire's Mother) finds herself in trouble.  And even then there is a time gap between Claire learning of her mom's predicament and action being taken.  However, when the action picks up it gets very interesting.  With young teen romance thrown into the mix and you have a great YA read.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who is interested in a light YA read with a PNR twist to it.  There is no sexual content but mention of brief nudity which is common when shifters are present.

For me I rate this one a 3.5 but I would recommend this one highly for those within the age demographic- a 5.

Stay tuned for a giveaway of One Copy of this title.
And as always comments are welcomed.  Plus, link your review below via Linky Tools.

Claire de Lune

Book Trailer:

"Torn between two destinies?

Claire is having the perfect sixteenth birthday. Her pool party is a big success, and gorgeous Matthew keeps chatting and flirting with her as if she's the only girl there. But that night, she discovers something that takes away all sense of normalcy: she's a werewolf.

As Claire is initiated into the pack of female werewolves, she must deal not only with her changing identity, but also with a rogue werewolf who is putting everyone she knows in danger. Claire's new life threatens her blossoming romance with Matthew, whose father is leading the werewolf hunt. Now burdened with a dark secret and pushing the boundaries of forbidden love, Claire is struggling to feel comfortable in either skin. With her lupine loyalty at odds with her human heart, she will make a choice that will change her forever?"

"I’d rather face a dozen lethal assassins any night than deal with something as tricky, convoluted, and fragile as my feelings. But here I am. Gin Blanco, the semi-retired assassin known as the Spider. Hovering outside sexy businessman Owen Grayson’s front door like a nervous teenage girl. One thing I like about Owen: he doesn’t shy away from my past—or my present. And right now I have a bull’s-eye on my forehead. Cold-blooded Fire elemental Mab Monroe has hired one of the smartest assassins in the business to trap me. Elektra LaFleur is skilled and efficient, with deadly electrical elemental magic as potent as my own Ice and Stone powers. Which means there’s a fifty-fifty chance one of us won’t survive this battle. I intend to kill LaFleur—or die trying—because Mab wants the assassin to take out my baby sister, Detective Bria Coolidge, too. The only problem is, Bria has no idea I’m her long-lost sibling … or that I’m the murderer she’s been chasing through Ashland for weeks. And what Bria doesn’t know just might get us both dead …"

Intrinsical by Lani Woodland

Lani's Intrinsical website is super cool with pictures, trailer and a sneak Peek .  Intrinsical will be here August 20, 2010 by Pendrell Publishing  Personally, I love a dorm setting in YA books.  It allows for a leniency and freedom for a teenager to get into trouble-lol (every parents dreams, right.)  This one looks great.  If anyone reviews this one let me know i would love to read it. I wonder if Lani is a Hawaiian name- Lani in Hawaiian mean "heaven." Perhaps, I will email her to find out and satisfy my curiosity.

 Intrinsical

"Sixteen-year-old Yara Silva has always known that ghosts walk alongside the living. Her grandma, like the other females in her family, is a Waker, someone who can see and communicate with ghosts. Yara grew up watching her grandmother taunted and scorned for this unusual ability and doesn't want that to be her future. She has been dreading the day when she too would see ghosts, and is relieved that the usually dominant Waker gene seems to have skipped her, letting her live a normal teenage life. However, all that changes for Yara on her first day at her elite boarding school when she discovers the gene was only lying dormant. She witnesses a dark mist attack Brent, a handsome fellow student, and rushes to his rescue. Her act of heroism draws the mist's attention, and the dark spirit begins stalking her. Yara finds herself entrenched in a sixty-year-old curse that haunts the school, threatening not only her life, but the lives of her closest friends as well. Yara soon realizes that the past she was trying to put behind her isn't going to go quietly. "

Ramona & Beezus

Ramona & Beezus in theaters NOW!! and I just seen it with my daughters.
5 stars- TERRIFICO movie and a MUST see.
The actress that plays Ramona, Joey King, is brilliant.  She had the facial expressions down pat.
Plus, John Corbett and Josh Duhamel are a hotties!=) hehehehe!=)
Actually, the entire cast is brilliant and note worthy.

The movie certainly does the books justice.  For those who have not read the books and knows little of Ramona and her adventures will certainly grasp the fact that she is one of a kind.
Go out and enjoy this one with your kids or with your girlfriends.

Hey.... Did anyone spot the Meg Cabot book on Beezus's desk and later on she was seen reading it.
Plus, I just loved the ukuleles in the music room. Very Cool!

Angel by L. A. Weatherly

Angel by L. A. Weatherly  will be released October 29th 2010 by Usborne Publishing Ltd in paperback.  According the the book trailer LA Weatherly reinvents the angel and I must admit that I am enticed by that idea.m  Also, right now if you follow on twitter and 500 followers are reached then there will be a giveaway.

ANGEL - cover

In a world where angels are beyond redemption, Alex thinks he's found one that might deserve mercy. Alex is a ruthless assassin - of angels. Forget everything you've heard about them before. Angels are not benign celestial creatures, but fierce stalkers whose irresistible force allows them to feed off humans, draining them of their vitality until there is barely anything left. As far as Alex is concerned, the only good angel is a dead angel...until he meets Willow. She may look like a normal teenager but Willow is no ordinary girl. Half-angel, half-human, Willow may hold the key to defeating the evil angels. But as the hunter and the hunted embark on an epic and dangerous journey and Willow learns the dark and terrifying secrets of her past, Alex finds himself drawn to Willow...with devastating consequences. Eoin Colfer reinvented the fairy, Stephenie Meyer reinvented the vampire, L.A. Weatherly reinvents the angel! This is a heart-pounding, knuckle-whitening, paranormal romance action-adventure for fans of the "Twilight" series. This is the first in a devastating new trilogy.

**Elizabeth Vaughan News**

I have been waiting for Elizabeth's newsletter forever. Well, not forever but since I read her novels and became a HUGE fan.  I have one last book of hers to read, Destiny's Star, then I will have read all of her works.  I already own the title I just have to knock a few others down first.

Okay... so according to her newsletter Berkley will be reprinting the fabulous title of Warprize in March of 2011.  I wonder if they will be remaking the cover.  I L.O.V.E. the current cover so I am not to excited for a new one.

Warprize (Chronicles of the Warlands, #1)

Perhaps, I will have a showdown- Battle of Covers- when the time comes.  That would be fun!  Warprize will definitely be on my Book Release list when March rolls around.

April 2011, another novel will make its appearance, WarCry (AHHHHHHHHHH!!).  It'll be Heath and Atira's story.  Somebody please list it on Goodreads so I can TBR it!!

This August Elizabeth will be the Author Guest of Honor at GenCon in Indianapolis- another event I will not be attending but now really wish I could.  The Newsletter shares the website so here it is: GenCon website .

If you do not subscribe to Elizabeth's newsletters and you are a fan- sign up!  She said she will be sending out quarterly so not to crowd our inboxes.  September will be the next one.  I will be up keeping on the latest news so not to worry if you don't subscribe.
*sigh* I can not wait for MORE information on the upcoming release of WarCry.  Do I foresee a teaser in my future!? LOL!  One can hope, right?

Thank you Elizabeth for bringing such great novels to the book world.  I want more.

Review: I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You (Gallagher Girls, #1) by Ally Carter

 May 1st 2006 by Hyperion
 284 pages

The Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women is a fairly typical all-girls school—that is, if every school teaches advanced martial arts in PE, chemistry always consists of the latest in chemical warfare, and everyone breaks CIA codes for extra credit in computer class. So in truth, while the Gallagher Academy might say it's a school for geniuses what they really mean is spies. But what happens when a Gallagher Girl falls for a boy who doesn't have a code name?

Cammie Morgan may be fluent in fourteen languages and capable of killing a man in seven different ways (three of which involve a piece of uncooked spaghetti), but the Gallagher Academy hasn't prepared her for what to do when she meets an ordinary boy who thinks she's an ordinary girl. Sure, she can tap his phone, hack into his computer, and track him through a mall without him ever being the wiser, but can she have a regular relationship with a regular boy who can never know the truth about her? Cammie may be an elite spy in training, but in her sophomore year, she's doing something riskier than ever—she's falling in love.

I read this title at the start of July.  With 4th of July festivities I thought to read a book that appeared to be short, light and quick and that it was.

Cammie Morgan is a delightful character and has friends that complement her well.
The plot is infused with spy know how, wit and romance.  The spy stuff is balanced perfectly where it didn't seem over-top-scratching-my-head-what-the-hell.
One thing that surprised me was the lack of sexual elements.  Many times, YA books have questionable excerpts (which I personally love in a good book-lol-but for my teen sister-hella no).

Overall, Book one of the Gallagher Girls is a fun and simple read.  I will be passing this one to my sister.

4 out of 5 for me, personally but in regards to how much I like it for my 16 yo sister it's a 5.

Head over to Ally Carter's website.  There are some really cool things like quizzes- Which Gallagher Girl are you? I got Cammie with Bex coming in close after.  I'm thinking I am more-so like Bex though.

Which Gallagher Girl are you?
Your Result: Cammie
Sure, you feel invisible sometimes, but people who know you always see and love you. Even though you can hold your own with the books, you're smartest when you're trusting your guts and your heart.

Interview: A TOUCH MORTAL by Leah Clifford

Please welcome debut author Leah Clifford.  Just reading the blurb I am on edge... waiting.
This novel is definitely one I am picking up and reading.  I hope you all enjoy this interview.  Thank you Leah for sharing a bit about A Touch Mortal and about herself.  I have a feeling there are more Pizza stories that I am sure would have me gasping for air laughing.
A Touch Mortal is set to release February 22, 2011 by Greenwillow Books.

A Touch Mortal

LLL: According to your website Bio you've had an array of jobs.  Could you tell us your most memorable pizza delivery or a memorable customer you waited on?
LC: Well, we had one lady who was a regular customer at the pizza place I worked at.  It became pretty obvious that she was on some kind of drug. Several times she answered the door completely naked and accused the delivery people of eating the olives off her pizza.

LLL: Could you tell us a bit about your novel, A TOUCH MORTAL?
LC: Sure!  I'll give you the description from my website I think it sums up the story best.
Death isn't what Eden expected. Where the hell is her release? Her quiet ending? Not that Eden remembers the details of her final hours, but one thing is for sure--becoming a Sider, trapped between life and death, was definitely not part of the plan...
For Eden, nothing seems to be coming easy. There's no way of telling  what will happen when her fingertips graze human skin. The power that builds inside her, Touch, strips away morals and logic.
Some people only feel a high; others are overcome by their darkest thoughts.
But honestly there's not much time for her to worry about her effect on mere mortals. She's got her own drama. Somehow, word's gotten around that her Touch can kill her own kind. With desperate siders already camping out on her doorstep, the last thing Eden needs is the rumor to spread. Especially since it's true...

LLL: What has your journey been like to become published?  What advice would you give to an aspiring writer?
LC: I signed with my agent, Rosemary Stimola, in February of 2009.  We did edits, went out to publishers and got some wonderful feedback.  Based on that, I added about 100 pages to the front of the book.  When we went out on submission again, GreenWillow made us and offer and with their editing style and excitement we knew it was the best home for A Touch Mortal!  My advice for aspiring writers?  Edit.  Keep an open mind.  Be prepared to work HARD.  And know that it's all worth it :)

LLL: Have you bonded with your characters?  How do you view your characters?
LC: Is it bad to say I love them? lol It's hard to explain.  To me they're nearly real and I spend a LOT of time with them, so I've really bonded with them.  I get pretty upset if I'm writing a tough scene and have to leave to go to my day job.

LLL: Where did you draw your inspiration from to write A TOUCH MORTAL? Is there a reason you chose the name Eden?
LC: This book started off as a short story I wrote for a college class.  Eden, Jarrod and Adam were in that original story though I don't remember naming them.  Most times, the characters name themselves.  Lines of dialogue will come into my head and one character will mention someone I don't know yet. Then it's my job to figure out who this mystery person is.

LLL: Could you briefly tell us what a Sider is?
LC: A Sider is a new character on the paranormal scene so I know there's been quite a bit of curiosity! Normal mortals have a path they follow, basic events from birth to death that lead them either Upstairs or Downstairs (the Heaven and Hell of my world).  Siders have no path.  When they die, they come back because they have nowhere to go.

LLL: How does Eden view her Touch ability?
LC: Touch can make a mortal euphorically manic or depressed to the point of suicide, depending on their mood when the Sider passes it to them.  Like most Siders, Eden's not happy about being forced to spread Touch (those who don't have the negative feelings build in THEM).  But Eden carries a LOT more Touch than a normal Sider, so she handles things a bit differently.

LLL: Is there anything you are currently working on that you would like to share with us?
LC: Writing-wise, I'm hard at work on the sequel and I'm also part of a vlog group on Youtube called the YA Rebels that I post to every Thursday.  Between those and the day job, I stay pretty busy!

What is BBA?

BBA is short for Book Bloggers Anonymous.  Essentially BBA is a Book Club open to the public- anyone can join in at anytime.

Here is the description found on the BBA group on Goodreads which is where we discuss current BBA books.
"The purpose of this Book Club is to reach out to other bloggers by sharing great books and discussions while showing support for our favorite authors and having an awesome time in the process. Please join and let's talk books:)"

With that said- I have the honor of hosting next month's BBA Book.  There are three choices up for voting via Polldaddy.com on my left sidebar.  OPEN voting.  Please cast a vote whether you are participating in BBA or not.  Perhaps, one or more of these titles interest you and you'd like to learn more about them from our discussions.

I present to you the three title selection. Always the first in a series unless otherwise noted.  Voting is open til July 21, Wednesday.

Then a drool-worthy man shows up at her door claiming that he accidentally bit Marty. And since he's a werewolf, she is now, too. Thinking Keegan Flaherty is clearly insane, Marty refuses to believe a word until a kidnapping makes her realize there's more at stake than just her highlights. "The exciting debut of a new paranormal romance series

As a Miami narcotics detective, Leah Daniels never knows how her day will turn out. But she certainly never expected to be strapped to a stone altar, the human sacrifice in an ancient Mayan ritual meant to coax up a demon from the underworld. Or that she’d be saved by a handsome warrior-priest king who claims to recognize her from his visions...

Jaguar Strike wishes he hadn’t made the mistake of reuniting his fellow warrior priests, or broken the law by saving their chosen human sacrifice. Now, he has no choice but to join forces with Leah and invoke dangerous magic in a death-defying race against the end of time
