Aloha Allyson.
I am elated to welcome Allyson for a guest posting. I asked Allyson what would her main characters Mick and Janet do if they were to vacation here in Hawaii or any where for that matter. With all the action in Stormwalker a vacation is definitely called for.
Thanks so much for inviting me to your blog! I’m glad you enjoyed Stormwalker.
You mentioned that you’d like to hear about what Janet and Mick might do if they vacationed in Hawaii. That’s great, because, Mick, in fact, was born on a Pacific Island! (I reveal this, along with other things about Mick’s origins in book 2, Firewalker, coming in November).
If Mick and Janet vacationed in Hawaii, Mick would at first show Janet his territory, on his little island not far from Hawaii. I’m sure Janet would love the natural beauty, but she’d probably want to continue to the islands where she could eat out and shop. I suspect the two of them would best love a place that had remote areas (say on the Big Island or on Molokai or someplace they could find lots of privacy). In those places, Mick could “be himself,” and Janet could tune into the storms and nature.
I love Hawaii myself and go whenever I can. We vacation most on Maui where we snorkel and eat (or eat and snorkel; we can go either way). I love the interior of Maui with its rainforests, waterfalls, and the beautiful Ioa valley, plus the black sand beaches around Hana.
When I first went to Hawaii I was struck with how similar it was to the deserts where I live (except, um, without the ocean). When you drive through Navajo country, you see incredible vistas opening out, but at the same time, there’s a surprise around every corner. Canyons drop into the earth, cliffs soar, and the colors are incredible. Most people think of the desert as plain and blah and nothing but sand, but it’s not true. You can see every color of the rainbow, and the shadows and light change all the time.
The northern deserts were the perfect place to set my fantasy romance of Stormwalker. Janet is Dine, which is how the Navajo refer to themselves. “Dine” means, simply, “The People.” (“Navajo” is a word applied by the Spanish). She has incredible magic, when it’s storming, and it can overwhelm her—but lucky for Janet, she has Mick, a hunk of a biker with dragon tattoos running down his arms, sexy blue eyes, and the ability to draw off her excess power. Mmm, mmm.
And then there’s Coyote. I’ve always enjoyed stories about Coyote, the Native American trickster god. He can be evil or good, funny or dark, and many of the tales are blatantly sexual. My version of Coyote is a blend of dark, funny, and sexy, and you’re never quite sure which side he’s on or what he’s going to do. In his human form, his six foot something, strong and muscular, with dark, dark eyes, black hair, and a disarming grin. I’m loving him!
I hope there’s something in Stormwalker for everyone to savor! Stay tuned for Firewalker, where I delve more into Mick’s background, plus introduce some new characters (fire-breathing dragons included!).
