June 2010 Book Releases

Natasha @ A Great Book is the Cheapest Vacation, Stephanie @ Paper Cut Reviews and I will be compiling a list of monthly book releases.
Feel free to post a direct link over to our monthly book release posts.  However, we ask that you do not copy, paste and post the chart itself.
Each book is linked to Goodreads where you can find more information.  This may or may not be the case in the future.  We may decide to link else where but right now I love GR.

So I present to you June 2010 Wish List Book Releases.
Enjoy this compiled list.
Also, if we have missed a title from any of these genres: PNR, UF, SciFi, Steampunk, etc please leave a link with Linky Tools below- either to your post or to GR, Amazon, etc.  I will do my best to update the list accordingly.

Review: Spirit Bound (Vampire Academy, #5) by Richelle Mead

by Richelle Mead

Spirit Bound (Vampire Academy, #5)
May 18th 2010 by Penguin/Razorbill

I have skimmed reviews of this novel- mainly, the endings so I could experience this one myself.
The common denominator among all the reviews I have skimmed were- not much can be said without sharing any spoilers.  I agree.

Four months have transpired much change at St. Vladimir's and among its students.
Rose is recovering from her run in with Dimitri in Russia but by no means find peace because now Dimitri is hot on her tail: watching and waiting.
Lissa has also been through change.  She and her relationship with Christian is at a stand still but they obviously still care for one another.  She has been able to work with her Spirit abilities more so and is becoming more then adequate with them.
Adrian is trying to make a life change by cutting his various vices, namely smoking and drinking.
After ceremonies and trials, the equivalent to graduation, they head off to The Royal Court.

On Rose's trip to Russia she makes a discovery of information that she just can not ignore.  With that information is how Spirit Bound begins.  After Rose kicks butt at her Guardian Trials, she and Lissa are making plans to obtain access to a certain someone they have every reason to avoid at all cost.  They enlist the help of Eddie, a very trusted friend and fellow Guardian.  Everything takes off from there.  Change begins to raise.  Dimitri surfaces, plans become known among friends, punishments are dealt, secrets and mysteries are revealed, a new law is passed, the impossible is made possible, someone is placed on trial for a crime they not committed and life at The Royal Court proves to be full of ..... adventures? danger? all the above?

Last Sacrifice (Vampire Academy, #6)

I must admit, I am Team Dimitri but I have a major soft spot for Adrian.  He cares for Rose and wants nothing more then her happiness.  I do not want to give anything away but I will say that Rose should have just waited a bit longer to sort her emotions out.  I am afraid that in the next sequel there will be heartache.
With that said- I am dying for the Last Sacrifice (Vampire Academy, #6) to hit shelves.  The ending of Spirit Bound is big.... so big that the beginning of the next installment will be anything but slow.

Give-Away & Interview with Jennifer Estep

Now Closed... Winner will be selected and contacted!
Thank you for entering!

Aloha and welcome Jennifer.
Mahalo for being here. Jennifer is the author of recent titles: Spider Bites and Web of Lies.
She has written other novels that I have my eye on as well.

Why did you decide on Stone and Ice for Gin's elemental powers?
A: When I set up my magic/world, I knew that I wanted two elements to compliment each other – like Air and Fire, and Ice and Stone – and two elements to oppose each other – like Air and Stone, and Fire and Ice. After I got that worked out, I decided to give Gin two elements that worked together – Stone and Ice. Plus, I thought that I could give Gin some really cool powers using these elements and maybe make my book a little different from other elemental books out there.
With her Stone magic, Gin can do everything from make her own skin as hard as marble to make bricks fly out of a wall. With her Ice magic, she can create shapes, like Ice knives, cubes, and daggers. In future books, we’ll find out a little bit more about her powers – and how they are growing.

https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=33abb18530&view=att&th=128d6d1b396c320c&attid=0.3&disp=inline&zw  https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=33abb18530&view=att&th=128d6d1b396c320c&attid=0.2&disp=inline&zw

Out of all 8 legged insects, why a spider?
A: I just thought that the Spider would be a really cool assassin name. Plus, there’s a spider symbol in psanky, which is the Ukranian art of Easter egg dyeing. I’ve done a couple of stories on psanky for the newspaper where I work and the spider symbol always stuck with me as being interesting. It resembles the rune that can be seen on Gin’s hand on the book covers. Besides, you never see spiders until they bite you … kind of like assassins. ;-)

I am a big fan of the Detective but I can not help my curiosity. Will we hear more of what happened with Gin and Finn?
A: Not really. I mention Gin and Finn’s previous romantic relationship throughout the books, but it’s firmly in the past. They both realize that they are better off as friends than lovers. In fact, Finn gets his own love interest, starting in book three, Venom.

Gin has a talent and passion for cooking. So please dish .... literally, if possible. lol.
A: Gin is an assassin, and she kills people for money, something that she’s very good at. But I also wanted to give her other quirks and traits, things that people could identify with. That’s were the cooking came in – I thought that was something that a lot of people would find interesting. Plus, having Gin love to cook let me come up with the Pork Pit and stage so many scenes there, as well as offer some bonus material in the form of recipes on my website.

What is your favorite sandwich?
A: I can’t pick just one! I love peanut butter and banana, a good club sandwich, a gooey grilled cheese, a barbecue beef dripping with sauce … Can you tell that I like sandwiches? ;-)

Do you drink chicory coffee?
A: Nope, I don’t drink chicory coffee. In fact, I don’t drink coffee at all. I love the way that it smells, but I just don’t like the way that it tastes, no matter how much sugar I put in it – and believe me when I tell you that I’ve tried putting a lot of sugar in it. LOL.

Name your most favorite finger-licking-worthy greasy indulgent.
A: There’s nothing better than eating my grandma’s fried chicken, along with her buttermilk biscuits slathered with homemade strawberry preserves. There’s so much grease in this meal that you can feel it on your fingers, but it is sooo good. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it!

Does cooking soothe you as it does Gin?
A: I do like to cook. I don’t know that it soothes me, but I’m always on the lookout for new recipes to try. I especially like making desserts. It’s always good to have something sweet in your life.

Okay.... this is the most burning question of all. Peanut butter and pumpkin mixed together, a layer of sliced bananas, sourwood honey drizzled over, topped with sprinkled cinnamon and wedged between two slices sourdough bread. Seriously? Is this a concoction you've experience because I am dying to try it?
A: I’ve always loved peanut butter and banana sandwiches, and one day, I found a recipe to make a simple dip combining peanut butter and canned pumpkin. So I made it and used it for the base of my sandwich. Top it with a little honey and some cinnamon on some great, soft, sourdough bread, and you’ve got a fantastic sandwich.

Review: Don't Kill The Messenger (Messenger, #1) by Eileen Rendahl

Don't Kill The Messenger (Messenger, #1)

First off, this cover rocks and definitely caught my eye *finger snap* like that.
"Don't Kill The Messenger" is a great title and descriptive.
Melina Markowitz is just that, a Messenger.
She skirts the lines between Mundanes/'Danes (humans) and Arcanes/'Canes (those who
are among the things of myth and camp fire stories).
She is a Messenger or in Melina's words "a glorified gopher."
There is no payment to reward the burden but all the risk involved.
She is the go-to gal when creatures of the 'Cane world want something delivered.  Be
it a message or possession.

Once a child hood tragedy has led to the everyday life not fully fitting in anywhere.
Melina is an engrossing Protagonist and a pleasure to read.
She has been 'different' since age three when she died and was brought back.
Her life seems to be a string of happenings and not so much as living.

Melina's complexity is gladly welcomed.
Is it weird to say I find her humor, at times dark, refreshing?
For instance: page 16 in reference to the rules of not killing the Messenger but
seeing as how many creatures she rubs elbows with don't always heed rules regardless of punishment.
"If I die, I'd like to know that someone will suffer after I am gone.  I'm just that kind of little
ray of sunshine."
This humor continues throughout the novel.  What I particularly like is how Eileen Rendahl
weaves this humor into various settings in the novel- from sharing back story to fighting scenes and
everything in between.

Don't Kill The Messenger introduces readers to an array of characters and creatures.
Melina spends majority of the novel tracking down Kiang Shi, Chinese Vamps, and their evil-doing
human puppeteers.  Chaos is in her city and somehow she finds herself in middle of it all.
Will she be able to reign in the chaos?

There is action of all sorts present here: flirting with handsome men to flirting with
danger *hi-yahhh* (My sad attempt of a Ninja)
I am happy to have found this title while perusing the book store aisles.  It was the first time I
seen the novel so if you have made a post about this book- be it a highlight in a meme
or a review please do link up.  I would love to see if others enjoyed this book as well.

As always.... please make sure reviews with spoilers be marked as such.
Any honest review is welcomed as long as reviews are done respectfully.
Mahalo!

A reasonable woman couldn’t think otherwise, especially in the presence of Cabal St. Lawrence, a spectacularly muscled specimen of the Bengal breed. The epitome of the male animal, his sensuous growl can fire up Cassa’s vulnerable body faster than a flame. Yet neither can ignore the nightmare unfolding around them...

The Breeds have been incriminated in a series of violent murder, and accused of hiding a vicious serial killer. It’s left to Cassa and Cabal to discover the truth. But as hunter becomes prey, are trust and passion enough to keep them alive through the night"

Lion's Heat Synopsis:

Review: Rules of Attraction by Simone Elkeles

Rules of Attraction (Perfect Chemistry Trilogy, #2)

Rules of Attraction didn't even make it onto my "currently reading" list on Goodreads!  I read it too quick for even an status update.
I began this book around 530pm, right before dinner last Saturday.  I was quickly enamored with Carlos, Kiara and Tuck.  230am Sunday morning I was done.  9 hours after... with a dinner break, shower break, and bed time story for my daughters break.  Yup, it was that good!

Carlos is the brother of Alex Fuentes from Perfect Chemistry.  Growing up life has been rough on Carlos.  He has had his heart broken many of times as people continued to exit his life.  So like many would do he builds a wall up.   That wall is in the form of a devastatingly handsome and cocky young man thrown into a life where spinach leaves are found in salads (apparently, Carlos is unfamiliar with that).  After some trouble in Mexico Carlos is shipped off to live with Alex.  But Alex knows first hand that Carlos can change his destructive path if he so desired to.

As cocky as Carlos I admire him.  He embraced his culture and his heritage with pride.
page 25: "Me llamos Carlos. You can call me Carlos."
Even though his name is considered 'too beaner' ( not my words) Carlos refuses to go by any other name *applause from me*

Within Carlos there is good to be found and Kiara is just that person to find it.

Kiara is a quiet girl who struggles with a speech impairment.  She is unlike most of the teen aged girls at her school.  Kiara loves to fix cars, hike, run, anything outdoors but here is the SHOCKER.... she doesnt mind doing chores (lol).   But there is another side to her.  She loves a good challenge and she is quite feisty despite her quietness.  So of course there is no surprise when her bff is Tuck.  Tuck is eccentric in all the right ways and complements Kiara well.  Tuck is out spoken and hilarious!
Kiara and her struggles, I believe, make her more perceptive to Carlos and the real him.  The good in him.

I must admit that I adored all the characters.  Especially, Kiara's entire family who help Carlos in so many ways.   I will venture to say......... I like this novel more then PC.  I was giggling and laughing so much that my husband thought I was intoxicated (psst, I don't drink and so that says to something of my nature at the time).  Carlos and Tuck are by far the best combination for a laugh riot.
The romance between Carlos and Kiara was tender, sweet, and really helped Kiara to break out of her shell.  Carlos and Kiara complement one another just like Alex and Brittney do.

In addition, I am a sucker for a happy ending and family and so I cherish the Epilogue *sigh*

Thank you Simone for another riveting novel.
I highly recommend both books in this trilogy.
From me, 5 stars for both novels on Goodreads!

Soon I will be reading:
Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles
Leaving Paradise (Leaving Paradise, #1)

Book 3 in the Perfect Chemistry Trilogy is due out in 2011.
My review: Perfect Chemistry (Perfect Chemistry Trilogy, 1)

Review: Spells (Wings, #2) by Aprilynne Pike

Spells (Wings, #2) by Aprilynne Pike

Spells (Wings, #2)

Laurel is a faerie who is raised human.
I don't think I would ever want to learn first hand what it is like to be torn between two worlds.
She has a human life with strong human ties.  Her parents mean the world to her and so does her friends.

Being stuck between worlds also means for Laurel that she is stuck between boys.  David, her boyfriend, in the human world and Tamani in the faerie world.
In Spells, Laurel is discovering the faerie world and her place in it.  She is a Fall faerie or a Mixer as they are called by nickname.  She possesses the talent to create or mix serums from plants that are used for all sorts- medicine and weapon alike.

Most of the book is focused on learning about the faerie world.  I found it fascinating especially with Aprilynne's descriptions of faerie- it had me day dreaming.
The action in Spells was minimal and was found more so towards the end but I was okay with that.
Romance is a whole notch up from Wings.
The forming relationships and the introduction of new characters adds to the novel's charm.

Now on to the nitty gritty.... Team David or Team Tamani? (fyi, I am Team Tamani.)
Laurel does have to make a decision and at the end she does.
Who she chooses- I can't say.
But what I can say is that the ending has a doozy of a cliff hanger.

I have been recommending Wings madly to all my friends for their teenagers (and for themselves).  Wings was fun and innocent.  Spells is a notch up.  There is more physical heat but nothing inappropriate.
On Goodreads I gave Spells a 4 rating.

Make your Team known.... Who are you!?

*The Traveling Book Gnome & Book Bloggers Anonymous*

Introducing:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Mee3qqTQ5KU/S-4fZnllrVI/AAAAAAAAAbc/82UomgQeXEw/s1600/travellingGnome3.png

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Mee3qqTQ5KU/S-4tGMwiQLI/AAAAAAAAAbk/PFYmk1gItzw/s1600/bookbloganon-001.png

Both The Traveling Book Gnome & Book Bloggers Anonymous began from an idea Steph @ Paper Cut Reviews had.  Steph had made a post and many of her readers (like me) chimed in- I adore the idea and knew I wanted to be apart of it.
This will be my first experience and I am eager.
The names are absolutely befitting.  Here is the description Steph posted:

"First I will talk about our Book Tour called The Traveling Book Gnome. The idea of this book tour was to have one blogger start with a book in one state/country then you pass the book to another blogger who may be on the other side of the world. Each blogger will try to make their time with the book as interactive as possible through posts, pictures and actually adding things to the book. Then at the end of the Tour the last blogger will give that book away to one lucky blogger:)

The next group is our new Book Club called Book Bloggers Anonymous(or BBA). Anyone can join the BBA goodreads group where we will post discussion and all things that have to do to Book Blogging. Here is the link to join the goodreads group Book Bloggers Anonymous What will be fun is that a few bloggers and I will take turns hosting BBA on our blogs once a month. That means a lot of cool interactive posts and reviews:) Are you excited?!! Now if you would like to help us pick the book for the BBA club for the month of June go to Stephanie and Athenna's blog Paranormal Haven and vote!! The true reason behind these two groups is to share, connect and discuss through great books:) So please support these groups to make it a success! If you are interested in joining the tour or being a BBA blog please email me: papercutreviewer@gmail.com."

Give-Away & Guest Post with Allyson James

Aloha Allyson.
I am elated to welcome Allyson for a guest posting.  I asked Allyson what would her main characters Mick and Janet do if they were to vacation here in Hawaii or any where for that matter.  With all the action in Stormwalker a vacation is definitely called for.

https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=33abb18530&view=att&th=12897c4f89bb9080&attid=0.1&disp=inline&zw

Thanks so much for inviting me to your blog! I’m glad you enjoyed Stormwalker.

You mentioned that you’d like to hear about what Janet and Mick might do if they vacationed in Hawaii. That’s great, because, Mick, in fact, was born on a Pacific Island! (I reveal this, along with other things about Mick’s origins in book 2, Firewalker, coming in November).

If Mick and Janet vacationed in Hawaii, Mick would at first show Janet his territory, on his little island not far from Hawaii. I’m sure Janet would love the natural beauty, but she’d probably want to continue to the islands where she could eat out and shop. I suspect the two of them would best love a place that had remote areas (say on the Big Island or on Molokai or someplace they could find lots of privacy). In those places, Mick could “be himself,” and Janet could tune into the storms and nature.

I love Hawaii myself and go whenever I can. We vacation most on Maui where we snorkel and eat (or eat and snorkel; we can go either way). I love the interior of Maui with its rainforests, waterfalls, and the beautiful Ioa valley, plus the black sand beaches around Hana.

When I first went to Hawaii I was struck with how similar it was to the deserts where I live (except, um, without the ocean). When you drive through Navajo country, you see incredible vistas opening out, but at the same time, there’s a surprise around every corner. Canyons drop into the earth, cliffs soar, and the colors are incredible. Most people think of the desert as plain and blah and nothing but sand, but it’s not true. You can see every color of the rainbow, and the shadows and light change all the time.

The northern deserts were the perfect place to set my fantasy romance of Stormwalker. Janet is Dine, which is how the Navajo refer to themselves. “Dine” means, simply, “The People.” (“Navajo” is a word applied by the Spanish). She has incredible magic, when it’s storming, and it can overwhelm her—but lucky for Janet, she has Mick, a hunk of a biker with dragon tattoos running down his arms, sexy blue eyes, and the ability to draw off her excess power. Mmm, mmm.

And then there’s Coyote. I’ve always enjoyed stories about Coyote, the Native American trickster god.  He can be evil or good, funny or dark, and many of the tales are blatantly sexual. My version of Coyote is a blend of dark, funny, and sexy, and you’re never quite sure which side he’s on or what he’s going to do. In his human form, his six foot something, strong and muscular, with dark, dark eyes, black hair, and a disarming grin. I’m loving him!

I hope there’s something in Stormwalker for everyone to savor! Stay tuned for Firewalker, where I delve more into Mick’s background, plus introduce some new characters (fire-breathing dragons included!).
