Guest Post & Giveaway With Eleri Stone

I am wicked excited to welcome Eleri Stone to LovLivLife Reviews.  I profess, after reading Mercy I will read anything by Eleri (even her to do list).  I am blown away by the amazing creativity placed into Mercy.

Be sure to read Eleri's post because she is giving away an ecopy of Mercy.  And since I love this book I will throw in a Book Jacket that I made inspired by the cover.  I recently gave one away and received some great feedback.  Read below for instructions.  Open Worldwide.
***************************

Hi Chasity! Thank you so much for having me here today.

I’m Eleri Stone a new author whose debut novel Mercy was just recently published by Carina Press. So by way of introduction, I thought I’d tell you a little bit about myself as a reader and a writer.

What I’m always looking for as a reader is something magical that can help me get lost for a few hours, make me look at my own world a little bit differently and introduce me to characters and places I never would have otherwise encountered.

Lost cities and hidden civilizations. All those delicious creatures of nightmare and legend – vampires, shape shifters, witches (oh, my!) living side by side with the normal everyday human world. I’m a sucker for those kinds of stories. I love the idea that there might be more out there left to discover. Something hidden. Something exotic. Something magical.

It’s why I fell in love with Indiana Jones when I was younger and why I love reading paranormal and urban fantasy books today. So when I decided to write a book, I picked the most mysterious setting I could think of – the Amazon jungle, a place modern science has only begun to seriously study, a place that can keep a secret. The people would be strong, fierce, deeply attuned to their animal nature.

And isolated as they were, they’d have their own culture, harsh by our standards but entirely their own. So that’s Mercy, a lost city in the Amazon populated by jaguar shape shifters. It’s about what happens when their world starts to collide with the human one.

Leave a comment and let me know why you read or what your favorite kind of story is and I’ll pick a random commenter to receive a free copy of Mercy. It is an eBook but even if you don’t have an ereader you can read it on your computer, iPod, iPad or most smart phones. (If you have questions about that, you can email me at eleristone@yahoo.com.)

LovLivLife note: Open Worldwide. Ends 1/5/11.

The following questions were submitted by those who commented and entered a previous Mercy Book Jacket giveaway.  Thank you for the submissions.
Questions:
1.  What were your inspirations for this story and why did you choose jaguars?
I was an anthropology major in school (among other things) and my favorite courses were about ancient Central and South American civilizations. I would definitely say that the setting came first and jaguars were a natural extension of that.

2.  What was your inspiration / how did you decide to place the setting where you did instead of somewhere else (which seems to be more of the norm)?
I wanted someplace a little out of the norm, really. I think South America is an unexplored setting in paranormal romance and I don’t know why. It’s visually stunning, culturally rich and there’s tons of interesting mythology.

3.  Is this part of a series and if so how many books are you planning for?
I didn’t plan this as part of a series but I did end up writing another story in the same “world” as Mercy. It’s on submission right now so **fingers crossed**.

4.  What was the most challenging thing when writing this book?
Hmmm. The most challenging thing was probably finding time to write. I probably wouldn’t have finished it if my youngest hadn’t started preschool last year leaving me with two child free hours every day. I really admire writers with young children who wake up at four in the morning to write before the kids get up but I never managed that. Without those two hours, I never would have finished this story.

5.  What do you feel like snacking on when writing?
Oh, that one’s easy. Chocolate. I love chocolate, especially dark chocolate. Yummy.

A request:
I love hearing about authors' personal lives and would love a glimpse of a day in her life. :)

Oh wow, I’m so sorry this is probably going to be really boring. I feel like I should make up something juicy but truth is I have three children, the oldest started high school this year and our youngest just started kindergarten (which was really hard). I told my husband it was time to have another baby but he said no or actually he said, “Noooooooooo!”

So…I work at home, volunteer when I can and write while the kids are at school. So up at 6:30 – breakfast, clean-up, packing backpacks and finding missing socks, out the door by 8:30 – drop everybody off, writing in the morning, all the house stuff when I need a break, errands, catch up on business side of writing in afternoon – blogs, author loops, prepping queries and all that, pick everybody up and start dinner. I try to keep evenings free so I can spend time with my husband and family but it always seems like there’s some seepage. I’ve never been very good about keeping to a strict schedule but it works – chaos has never really phased me either.

@baddict17 I read through my ups and downs too. I think my mood helps decide which type of book I'll reach for though.

I read to escape my boring life! lol I love getting lost in books, I have booklimia so usually I just can't stop reading a book I began... and sometimes finishing it is too hard and I have to get another one or re-read it if I really liked it!!

I am a HEA girl, and my favorites shelf is full of stories that are heartfelt and passionate, give me memorable characters that are far from perfect, and make me care, plus I have a particular fondness for paranormal romances.

I've been reading all kinds of romance for over 40 years, and I love where a well written story takes me. It's that dip out of reality that can totally recharge me, and that HEA that I've come to expect gives me that feel good moment that carries over into my slice of reality.

Thanks for the chance to win your story.

I'm always happy to see a book about cat shifters. I've always read books, sometimes as an escape from unhappy circumstances, sometimes just because I find it to be the most relaxing activity around. When I read, I'm able to completely concentrate on the words and shut out everything around me - TV and other media just doesn't do that for me.

Thanks for the giveaway.

@Cathy M "It's that dip out of reality that can totally recharge me, and that HEA that I've come to expect gives me that feel good moment that carries over into my slice of reality." <= Yes!! Such a wonderful description.
@JenM I agree there's something about reading that captures your complete attention in a way that other forms of media can't do.

WOW. Thanks everyone for commenting and Eleri for popping in. The comments are fascinating to no end. If anyone is curious why I blog it is because of comments like these. Is is nice to be among other readers who just GET IT.
I have quite a few regular readers in my life- Family and friends but nothing compares to the book blogging community! Thanks for the insight everyone.... Below is my catch up with the comments!!

@ Jessica Rabbit- "Everything but that book!" Yes, Mucho aggreeo.

@ Eleri Stone-- Glad to have you here and thanks for the compliments on the Jacket.

@ Camryn Rhys- I am very impressed my Carina's publishings. They have titles that sound fantastic and right up my alley. I have already marked their site and blog as a favorite.

@ baddict- Sounds like you found your saving grace. That's wonderful. And I agree with Eleri- emotions are powerful and I'm sure they play a huge role in book selections. Thanks to an enormous amount of amazing authors we have an array of choices.

@ Sophie- LOL- Booklimia? Love the term! Let you friend know that I am bowing too. I am always amazed at the amount some people can manage and accomplish! Hats off!

@ P Hav- Ditto Steph! I want to read it too =D!

@ Eleri- **Double fingers crossed** I will chant the mantra "Publish, publish, publish" in hopes of sending publish vibes your way >>>>>> Free is nice but definitely a back burner option. "Publish, publish, publish"

@ Cathy M- Well stated. I'm a big time HEA person as well. But I don't mind the characters going through the wringer. For MERCY it is gooooood lemme tell yah! *tight lipped* No spoilers here! =D
Btw, I am on the same wave length. Just that tiny dip into a world of make believe can do wonders on the mind, body and spirit!

@ JenM- agreed. The only thing that comes close is Music and the outdoors for me. When I feel I need to be grounded again I go for a hike- too exhausted to think about anything but where to place your foot next and then the sight to behold placed everything into perspective again.

@ Melissa- We are totally book soulmates!

@ mbreakfield- I am definitely with you on the entertainment value. Entertainment is my main focus when reviewing a title.

@ Tore- Cheapest vacation around right!?

@ Eleri & @ JenM- Cat shifters are top of the line for me to read as well. I'm fascinated with Jaguars now and need another story to sate my need. LOL!
*** Yes, I am really liking Cathy M's description.

Why do I read? Honestly because I would feel like a huge chunk of my life was missing if I did not. I have been a reader almost since birth and I am not sure what I would do if one day books were no longer allowed.

Favorite type of stories? I love strong Paranormal romances! They can either be Vampire, Shifter, Time-Travel, and any other form. The romance needs to be strong and undeniable :)

♫♥LovLivLife Reviews♥♫ said...

@ Felicia- to think there was a time when certain books were banned and burned is sad. I understand perfectly what you mean.

I agree on the romance "strong and undeniable :)" is what I like as well. Though with UF titles I can be patient for the romance to come. For instance, the Kate Daniel's series.

=) Thx for popping in Felicia!

I can't imagine a world without books either. And I agree on the undeniable romance. I love paranormals for the action, the worldbuilding and the interesting characters but when it comes down to it I keep turning pages for the romance.

Why I read & fav kind of story? Wow, you don't ask easy questions!
Why? Let's see: 1-to escape, of course. From life, stress, and all that. 2-Go places I've never been or can never go (like space, other planets, the past, etc). Even with all the time and money (which we don't have) I could never travel everywhere. And with my couiosity, that is what I would like to do. 3-Get to be someone else for a while. I have learn to like myself & chance the things I didn't like. But still enjoy 'being' the characters in some of my books for a while. Have no desire to be them for even a whole day, its just play time. 4-I learn things while have fun reading. History, tech, how other's minds work, and can't even grasp how much from on Tom Clancy or Robert A Hielien book (thoughs are almost too much). --I think you are getting the idea here.

Fav Kind of Book--That would depend on my mood. While I have been reading a lot of romance (and some erotica) the past year or two, I still like and read almost everything except horror (streight horror). As you can see from above, I like doing different things and going different places in my reading. Romance, adventure, history, SciFi, fantasy, etc its all interesting and can be exciting.
That was probably more than you were looking for, right?

lol Vicky - I wasn't trying to be difficult. Really : ) I read in a lot of different genres too, even horror.
Thanks darkreader!
@Jeannine - love my ereader! (I have a Nook.)
@vickyvak - me too! I think that's why I love fantasy and PNR so much.
@Jasmine - I love urban fantasy esp. if it has at least a little romance somewhere in the storyline.

Why I read? Wow that's a loaded question. You can blame it on my mom for starting me so young (I read my first book when I was 4) or blame it on the good and great authors' works that have chanced into my eager little hands.

Reading has always been a great escape, a big adventure, a glimpse of the unknown, and a freeing of my own creativity. I don't know what I would do or even be like as a person if I had not been an avid reader.

Maria (pronounced Mariah) I blame my mother... said...

First off…Mercy sounds fantastic!

I can honestly say I haven't read back through all the other comments (I know bad commenter) but I am willing to bet the majority of the answers as to why we read are the same...it is an escape! When I read I can see the story like it was a movie playing out in front of me and I am the lead actress. It takes the stress of a full day of work or running my kids around away and leaves me feeling fully clear headed and sane again!

My favorite stories are paranormal romances. I am not particular about a type of character...I am an equal opportunity lover to all, fallen angel to demon alike and everything in between. I will read anything from YA to erotica and like to throw in some suspense now and then.

Thank you!
